Johnson & Trump want to get rid of them altogether, so it's not like the GOP cares about the workers in the slightest. No reasonable deal would be accepted when those "across the aisle" (Schumer and his friends) are willing to play politics with the paychecks of 750,000 workers.
Centuries? The welfare state didn't start until after 1925.Yay! Let's use warped MAGA politics to UNWIND centuries of progress towards a gracious, caring welfare state!
Their majority isn’t large enough.Quick question - if the Republicans are in control of both houses of Congress, how could the Democrats force a shutdown?
Why not just vote to keep it open?
Quite right. It is a basic tenet of Neoliberalism that a worker should receive no benefits except from the hand of his employer.Centuries? The welfare state didn't start until after 1925.
We dont need or want a welfare state.
We need to help those who are truly needy. Far too many Americans aren't really needy and are still on the taxpayers dole.
Compassion is not in handouts when they cause dependency.
There are those that REALLY need our help. I'm happy to give it. But I bet we could cut our welfare in half through work and education programs. We could end up not needing all those illegals.
Shame those are also eroded over the years isn’t it? Someone should do something about it.I bet we could cut our welfare in half through work and education programs.
Attempting to get the budget under control by getting rid of wasteful spending is what's needed. Non-essential government employers aren't needed.Johnson & Trump want to get rid of them altogether, so it's not like the GOP cares about the workers in the slightest.
People who aren't here legally, yes. At a cost of 1.5 Trillion dollars.Schumer is trying to prevent the GOP from taking away people's healthcare, which is a bigger battle. Those paychecks wouldn't be delayed if the GOP were reasonable.
I didn't say anything about benefits from employers. In fact I said we SHOULD help those who are truly needy.Quite right. It is a basic tenet of Neoliberalism that a worker should receive no benefits except from the hand of his employer.
I agree. Helping people to get the occupational education and experience is critical in getting people involved in their own life. Real compassion is helping people to be independent and not dependent. When one is dependent it creates an atmosphere where they can be taken advantage of by those who want to encourage their victimhood. This builds resentment, insecurity, and a feeling they cannot succeed and are helpless. Being independent builds confidence, security, self esteem and helps them see the opportunities before them.Shame those are also eroded over the years isn’t it? Someone should do something about it.
But not routine benefits like health care. It's pretty clear that you think health insurance should be an employment benefit or a private purchase but not a government program.I didn't say anything about benefits from employers. In fact I said we SHOULD help those who are truly needy.
Are you sure you want that? Confidence and self esteem is what helps workers form unions and see the opportunity to stick it to their employers.I agree. If they truly felt confident, they wouldn't need to form a "union", which is often simply a mob meant to bully their employer into things that puts them out of business, and the employees out of jobs. Confidence means being able to stand on your own two feet and take your skills to a different job if you're so confident. Are you sure you want that? Confidence and self esteem is what helps workers form unions and see the opportunity to stick it to their employers.
Not necessarily. But not routine benefits like health care.
I think that the majority of the problem of the cost of health care is BECAUSE of health insurance. It's pretty clear that you think health insurance should be an employment benefit or a private purchase but not a government program.
And. of course, the working poor are not truly needy--is that it?I didn't say anything about benefits from employers. In fact I said we SHOULD help those who are truly needy.
The cost would be enormous, but we're already paying an enormous amount for healthcare. As an example, my health insurance costs about $700/month, and it's not even that good - I have a fairly high deductible. My employer covers most of it as a benefit to me, but that doesn't change the amount being spent. No I'm not sold on government healthcare in the US. Its a very big country and the cost would be ENORMOUS. I dont think Americans are ready for the tax structure it would take to make it work or the other issues that would surround it.
