Noah Webster's 1828 dictionary defines superstition as follows:

SUPERSTI'TION, n. [L. superstitio, supersto; super and sto, to stand.]

1. Excessive exactness or rigor in religious opinions or practice; extreme and unnecessary scruples in the observance of religious rites not commanded, or of points of minor importance; excess or extravagance in religion; the doing of things not required by God, or abstaining from things not forbidden; or the belief of what is absurd, or belief without evidence.

2. False religion; false worship.

A fair number of Christians have superstitious beliefs on a variety of things, particularly concerning Satan and demons. These superstitious beliefs extend far beyond the base things, such as recent CNN.com photo that contained a turtle with what many believe is an image of Satan. The most elementary Berean knows that the belief of Satan having horns and a goatee is pure superstition, and has nothing to do with who Satan is or how he operates. These superstitious beliefs concerning Satan go to an extreme, where some Christian's blame Satan and/or demons for their own sin and every bad thing that happens to them.

The Biblical scholar Sir Robert Anderson recognized the superstitious beliefs that many Christians hold about Satan. In his book "The Silence of God," published in 1897, Anderson called these superstitious beliefs "The Satan Myth." Below is the portion from his book where he discusses this:

In mosts cases, "base" sin is simply the result of (or giving in to) the lust of our flesh.

James 1:14 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.

Romans 1:24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:

I John 2:16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

If Satan were destroyed this very minute, contrary to some common misperception, the lust of the flesh would still be there and we would still sin. The reason is that our flesh is corrupt, and we are all sinners, and sin totally independent of Satan. The Apostle Paul makes numerous contrasts between the flesh and our spirit, and what he calls the "old man" and the "new man," and how they lust directly against each other.

Galatians 5:17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.

Ephesians 4:22-23 That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; And be renewed in the spirit of your mind

Paul tells us to be renewed in the spirit of our mind. This is done via knowledge.

Colossians 3:10 And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him

This renewing via knowledge is a reflection of what today's battlefield is - information warfare, the battle for knowledge or over knowledge.

II Corinthians 11:14-15 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.

Ephesians 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

Today, in the dispensation of grace, Satan's plan of operation is not to tempt us to sin with "base" things of flesh and blood. That would be an underestimation of Satan, as he's much, much smarter than that. Satan plan of operation revolves around mis-information and subtly corrupting God's message of grace. As opposed to tempting someone to sin a "base" sin, Satan acheives a far greater victory if he gets someone to believe a lie. Because when someone believes something, they will tell others, and become his tool by perpetuating the lie. This is his method of operation - transforming himself into an angel of light.

Before the cross, Satan's plan of operation was to physically oppose and prevent the coming of Israel's messiah and the prophetic kingdom. In his temptation of Christ, Satan's methods were very subtle, and didn't concern the temptation of "base" sin. Satan's method of temptation of Christ used the word of the God as the basis, and who Christ was, which is a true reflection of how Satan operates as an "angel of light." Satan quoted (misquoted actually) the word of God to Christ in Matthew 4. Satan added a phrase, and subtracted a phrase. Christ's response is simply amazing. He quotes scripture (rightly applied) right back at him. Satan's methods of using and misuing the word of God as his basis of operation go all the way back to Genesis, where his five methods can be clearly seen:

QUESTION THE WORD OF GOD: Satan's first method is to question the word of God from a positive approach. He wants to raise doubt about it, thereby questioning it. Genesis 3:1 "Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?”

SUBTRACT FROM THE WORD OF GOD: Another method is subtraction from the word of God. The example below shows the importance of every individual word. Genesis 3:2 “And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden.” Note that the word freely is left out. See Genesis 2:16 “And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat”

ADD TO THE WORD OF GOD: Satan also will add to the word of God, such as adding law to grace. Genesis 3:3 “But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.” Note that “touch it” is added. See Genesis 2:17 “But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.”

WATER DOWN THE WORD OF GOD: Satan will water down the word of God. Genesis 3:3 “But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.” Note that it is “lest ye die” where the God said “surely.” Genesis 2:17 “But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.”

DENY THE WORD OF GOD: Satan denies the word of God. Genesis 3:4 “And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die.” He denies Genesis 2:17 “But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.”
