The Responsibility of Freedom

Imagine for a moment, that for all your life all you have known is slavery!! For at least the last four or five generations of your family, that is all they have known as well. Suddenly from out of nowhere, it seems, you are free!! No longer whipped, abused, castigated or killed because of what you believe. Ancient Israel must have been bewildered by this sudden new found freedom!!

Coming into a more modern sphere, imagine what it must have felt like for Afro American slaves to be emancipated!! What about the fall of communism in Eastern Europe and what was once the U.S.S.R? The breakdown of apartheid in South Africa or the departure of colonialism in India?

Freedom is such a precious word. Often in the Western world it is something we seriously take for granted!! It is something as mentioned in our previous devotionals that comes with responsibility. What do you do when you have this freedom? It is a sad state of affairs sometimes to see what happens with this freedom.

Israel for example moaned and complained of going back to Egypt. We know what happened to them!! Some Afro American slaves bemoaned their poverty and wished to be back on the plantation. Eastern Europeans often pine for the security/guarantee of food in a Communist state, and some of the post-colonial countries are basket cases lead by morally and spiritually bankrupt people. Sometimes freedom is seriously mishandled!!

God has granted you freedom from a life of negativity. That freedom lies in the hope of his soon return. It comes from depending on him, relying on him in both good and bad times. It is a freedom to choose him and live a full life in preparation of an even better one. What are you doing with your freedom?

Father in heaven. We thank you for freeing us from mental slavery. We thank you for the gift of salvation. We pray that we use our gift wisely. In Jesus name. Amen

It also applies to us Asians. It suddenly hit me that what would happen if my country was under siege.
