  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The Quest
Chapter One

Walking down the well trodden path as the rays of sunlight came splashing over
the horizon like gentle waves upon the sand was Junels favorite part of the day like gentle waves upon the sand was Junels favorite part of the day even if her mother must come with. (She was very talkative and that annoyed Junel sometimes) It could be so peaceful and quiet that you would hear the tiny brook bubbling and splashing long before you got to it at the end of the long lane. Once in a long while Junels twin sister June would stumble out of bed rubbing her eyes and yawning to come with but that was seldom.
On one such morning she and her mother were out for their daily walk, when, slithering out of the bushes a came a snake. Its' eyes were red as a rose and its body was black as midnight. Inside its mouth the fangs were whiter than pearls. Mother and daughter both stopped to let it pass by, neither being very fond of snakes in the first place, But also because this one was to different from the common grass snakes they often saw. When the snake would not move they turned slowly about and took a step back the way they had come. As they left the snake struck out with its pearly white fangs and bit the mother on her heal. Instantly the snake disappeared while Junel watched in horror as her mother sank slowly to the ground. Recovering from her shock Junel started screaming for help and soon many neighbors had gathered. Some still yawning and rubbing the sleep from there eyes. Her mother had not died but she never recoved and was always mumbling to herself.
That had been 30 years ago and now Junel was 35. She still took her walk to the brook every day but she walked it alone. Her mother would not often leave the house and sat in the kitchen baking and mumbling half the day and spending the other half sleeping or writing. June to never would go down that way unless under great obligation for she had taken the change in their mother worse then Junel. Junel shuddered remembering that day and tried to think of something pleasanter. Picking a flower off of the path she wondered how the snake had disappeared. When she had tried to explain it, everyone had said "Oh now dearie, your just upset. Things don't disappear like that probably a trick of the light." She never brought it up again. Maybe it was a trick of the light maybe it was not. She had been the only witness. Sighing, she turned around to go back to the cottage for another day of cleaning and taking care of mama. Walking slowly she chanced a glance back and there on the path, looking regal and majestic sat the black snake. One fang missing from his mouth.

Slinking from tree to tree, Elantir tried to think up an excuse why, once again she would be late for the feast. If she told the truth she would surly be banned from leaving yet she hated to lie. Hearing a noise she dropped into a crouch, her grey eyes throwing glances at every shadow, piercing through them franticly hoping that she was not discovered yet. Not until she could circle around to the other side so that her real direction would not be known. But her hopes were of no avail. A sudden hand was laid on her shoulder and the voice of Neil spoke to her." Well, well, well, what have I here? A runaway! My, won't my father be glad to see you. I don't think that your little "expeditions" will continued after the information I have," he said while laughing.

"At least I have the courage to do It.," she said to him hoping to annoy him. It worked. Yanking hard on her hair he pulled her to her feet, pointed south and said, "March!" Elantir new he was trying to sound like man but really he sounded more like his little brother playing capture with the other few children. That made her want to laugh.

Junel unwillingly turned to face the snake. All she wanted to do was run and
yet she could just stand there as if struck dumb staring at this snake. A thousand emotions seemed to rip her apart inside. She was angry at the snake for ruining her mother, scared of it and its power, amazed by its evil beauty and confused why it had come back. What more could it do unless it had come for her as well. To put her, Junel, under its spell the same as it had her mother. In the end, anger and confusion won. Pulling herself up to her full height (which was not much) she looked it in the eye and confronted it in a harsh tone.
"Why have you come back? What more do you want? Are you here to hurt someone else? To make others subject to you?"

The snake looked levelly back at her, forcing her to look away. When it replied its voice was oily smooth. " Why do you lay so much crime upon me, a snake that you could easily smight and destroy? Did I not try to save your mother from an enemy and then get blamed for the tragedy because I was the only one there to be seen?"

Taken aback by these words she thought about them, yes, the snake had been trying to save her mother but was not able so something else bit her! O, how silly she had been all these years! Relief flooded through her whole body. Looking back at the snake she quickly adverted her gaze. Its eyes seemed to pry into her intermost being, as if by magic it could read her thoughts and know her deepest secrets. See the relief flood her face it made a mistake, the snake smiled reveling the hole in its mouth were the tooth used to be. Junel started to smile back and froze on seeing the gap. What have I been thinking? That snake is a liar. I must go before it’s too late! Once again as if reading her thoughts, the snake now gave himself a name and reassured her that he had done no harm.
" My name," he began in his honey sweet voice," is Lowern. All that I came back for was to heal your mother." Junel gasped, how could this evil thing do that when the best of doctors could find no cure? He continued "You do want her better, don't you? You would not wish for old grudges to get in the way of her healing now would you?" Seeing some confusion on her face, he inwardly laughed wickedly, The dumb, dumb, girl (for girl she still was) she will take the bait believing I can do such a thing. Ha, little does she know my cure will destroy instead of cure. I haven’t had this much fun in years.

"How could you do that, I mean, heal her?"
"Simple all you must do is trust me. That is simple is it not?" asked the snake." I will give you three days to think about it. Then I will return for my answer." On saying this Lowern disappeared Just like when he bit mother. She though. Turning, she walked slowly back up the path with the snake’s words ringing in her ears.

Upon reaching home her mother was all in a flurry. Her eyes were feverish and glazed over. They seemed to see things that were not visible to others and struck out blindly often knocking over things in her confusion.
"Mama, whatever is wrong?" June kept asking while Junel tried other ways all the while wondering if this had to do with the snake. Sudden fear gripped her, if she did not do what the snake wanted, trust him, what would he snake do to them? Would he hurt them all? His request had been simple, Just trust him, thats all I need to do. " O, if only life were simpler." she sighed aloud.
" If life were simple," began June, who had taken to telling proverbs to all who would listen " there would never be anything worth living for. Everyone would get fat an lazy."
Not me. Junel thought rebeliosly, I'd do my work and then have fun.
June could always tell when her sister was thinking "unlogicly" as she called it so now was no diferent.

" Junel, you know that if life were easy you would NEVER wash the dishes or sweep and mop the floor."

" If life were easy there would be no dishes to wash." Junel mumbled while trying to get her mother to take a nap. Shooting her sister a look June went back to polishing the few silver items the family owned. Her family was not all that diferent from the other folk around Meawe, a small town on the borders of Westmin. Westmin was a province of little importance and most of the people liked being somewhat away from all the hustel and bustle of other folk. Even if they were never as wealthy.

Junel turned her mind back to the task at hand, why must her mind always wonder from the duty at hand? Upon reaching the room, Junels mother practicly leaped to the bed and was asleep within moments. Her head filled with dreary thoughts, she slowly closed the door and walked softly down the hall.

Far to the north in the hidden valley of Ghonfonin only known to few, a different problem was going on. Neil had brought Elantir before his father Lord Fenondolin, was now was trying to diside what to do with her. He had promised her father that he would watch over and shelter Elantir. And so he had adopted her in a way and loved her as much as his own sons and daughters. But even though he loved her, Lord Fenondolin could not stand to be disobeyed. Elantir had always had a mind and will of her own and would stand firm on something to the bitter end if she deemed that she was right.Even if she found out the hard way she ws wrong. 'O, what a little nusance she had been growing up. All the things she had found out the hard way.' Thinking of these things he chuckled a little to himself, sighed and came back to the present. As he looked at Elantir standing before him, her eyes emitting only the slightest of emotions and those, when they leaked through he always found amusing. He used to see those thoughts and emotions often but as she grew older, she learned to keep her eyes blank and void of all emotion so that the glimces became less and less. Sighing again, he did the only thing he new he could do though even he, Lord Fenondolin greatest of all the Newva, could not change the future. he sentenced Elantir to her chambers even though that was not much of a punishment. But his heart was heavy and he needed to leave and think to himself.

Glancing up after Elantir had left, he saw the disapointment that the punishment was not harder on his sons face. One day Neil would learn why his father did what he did. One day he to would know all that went on in the world and carry the burden of not being able to change it.

A new day broke gently over the horizon spreading its golden light far across the twilight sky, proding the night away like a mother gently shooing her child to bed. Out in the trees a bird began to sing a song that seemed to describe the baeuty of its home. Soon many birds joined it and with a start the valley seemed to burst with a light that banished all shadows from its presence untill the end of day.

Obliviose to the beauty of it all, Elantir stared glumly at the sun as it rose above the trees and into the sky. Down on the garden path a few servers were begining to carry things across the lawn to a pavilion set up by a small clear pool near some trees. Breakfast was always served out of doors if the weather was nice, but today Elantir would not take part in it. All she could do was watch, not that she minded very much but the fact that Lord Fenondolin had not punished her serverly enough nagged at her mind. In fact it had kept her up most of the night though she did not know why since she had slept farirly well the night before. Elantir glanced out to the lawn again and saw more people ariving. All were laughing and being merry, All apeared to be without care in the world. For the first time in her life, Elantir felt a pang of loneliness as she sat there watching everyone have a nice time. Never before had she been banished this long. It had been two days since she had been brought back by Neil. Now, on her last day, she was only begining to think about why she had been punished and she did not like it one bit. Every time she thought about it a guilty feeling would rise up in her that was always a struggle to push back down.

Elantir wanted to think about something else. Looking around the room, her eyes came to rest on the small flute which she had been given as a parting preasent from her father. She did not like to think about him because, despite his promises to come back, he had been gone almost 200 years. Oh well, she sighed, I'v nothing left to do. So, slowly rising from her seet by the window, Elantir walked over to the flute and gently picked it up. It was so beautiful she was afraid she would break it. The flute was a creamy white with leave delacitly carved over it in a twining pattern, it was about as long as Elantirs foot and was light but yet strong. Carfully raising the insturment to her lips she tried to play it. To her astonishment the most beautiful sound came ushering forth like a deep note upon the wind. Elantir played the flute with all her heart and from the flute came the song of her heart. Down on th lawn some stopped to listen, marvelling at the music. While in the pavilion Lord Fenondolin looked away while a tear trickled down his cheek.

Chapter 2

Junel stared out the window on the third morning since the snakes reaperance, pondering what she should do. She wanted her mother to get well yet she could not bring herself to trust Lowern. Maybe I can get more time! Junel thought exsitedly. If she had a month or two she might be able to make herself trust him or she could find a cure in that time so she would not have to ever see that snake again.

With these thoughts Junel farily skipped out the door and down the path, looking from side to side for Lowern. Sure enough he appeared close to the stream, his black scales gleaming in the morning rays, casting an evil glare about the grass and flowers who wilted under the intencety of it.

Taking her shining eyes and happy smile as a sign that his plan had worked and she was his. The triumph was short lived when Junel anounced her plan, (leaving out the part about finding a cure.)

Lowern was taken aback and angery. He had not thought she would doubt his word. Trying to hide the wrath from his voice, he concented and gave her a month to think about it. Slithering away into the shade he vowed he would win and would destroy all who aposed him.

June was waiting when Junel came back from her walk.

" I know who you were talking to down on the path." June said, "I also know that you would never trust this, Lowern as you call him. I know you will look espesally hard this month for a cure and that when you find none you will become sick with worry and frustration."

" What were you doing spying on me?" Junel raged, " I can handle this alone!"

" Where will you look first for this cure?"

" O, I don't know." Junel moned, wishing once again that the world were less complicated.

" I know." June said, while watching for her sisters reaction.

" You know?"

" Of course, reading does have its high points. If we go to the Valley of Ghonfonin, the lord there should be able to help us."

" We? you meen we are going together? Thats wonderful! It will be so fun to go adventuring! why did you not mention this before? Where is this Ghonwhateveryoucallit, on the maps we have? I've never seen it on them. And when do we leave? How far away is it? Do we have to plan alot? If we do can you do it? I hate planning. Are we leaving today?"

June laughed for the first time in months, her sister could be so scatter-brained, espesally when she was exsited. As she laughed, it felt as if all worries floated away like a leaf upon the breeze in a cool autum morning. Relishing the pleasure of being looked up to, June began to answer all of her sisters questions. "First, Ghonfonin is not on the maps because people now days consider it a legend, they think it does not exist, that it was destroyed in the early wars when the world was young. Second, Ghonfonin is about 13 leages away at the least. Third, I did not mention it to you before because I knew you would want to leave without planning so everything is ready and we'll leave tomarrow morning. Mother will stay here and Mrs. Melin was kind enough to agree to check in on her every day. Father and the boys will be here as well."

The next morning, June and Junel started off on their long quest.

The quiet was shatered as June and her sister tromped through the woods on a bright friday morning. Usually Tquane can be quite quiet when walking through woods but today, Junel was in a rush so she took little care of how she walked. They had been traveling since dawn and, even though it was early morning still, they were both tired and hungry so they settled down for an early snack.

High in the trees above them a lone crow looked down in them his blackish-blue wings shining in the sun. Trying to stay silent so he would go undetected for a while at least he watch them set out the cheese, cider, and apples.

Junel was enjoying her early snack, watching the sun slowly climb higher into the sky on its daily trip above the world. She wondered why it went from east to west as bushy tailed squirrel hopped speedily from tree to tree. She was cattering excitedly all the way until disapearing high up in the tree tops of the great elms that encirled the two travelers at the present moment. All the while June had sat silent, pondering what they should do next. Trying to deside how to voice her thoughts, June glanced up in time to see a crow as black as night fly away into the trees, cawing and screaching loudly. Thinking nothing of it, she turned to Junel and asked her a question.

"What do think we should do next? I'm not familiar with these woods."

"Well," said Junel, still lost in her own thoughts," I think that we should just follow the path, that would be our best choice... I think." Her voice was dreamy and her eyes were staring at a tree branch but they never saw it so absorbed were they on what she saw through her minds eye. Sighing June stood up and brushed any crimbs from her travelers clothes. As she started to put away the food, Junel stood suddenly up and started walking off into the woods.

June ran after her sister but no matter how fast she went, Junel always stayed far ahead of her, as if she were being born upon the wind by invisable wings. After an hour of running, June lurched forword, unable to take another step. Her breath came in ragged gasps while she lay half in and half out of a muddy pool benieth rotten trees covered with vines and moss, while the ripples from her fall still echoed silently accross the water. The light was dim and it had a musty smellThe woods were still except for thenoice of her breath, almost to still thought June to
herself. Still breathing heavely, she stood up and looked around. The path and her sister were nowhere in sight. Turning around in a circle, she saw that there were only faint markings from her rampage through the woods. Also, her sister had left only faint markings on ground that stopped at the edge of the pool.
June looked out across the murky water, tears slowly forming in her eyes. What if her sister had falen in? Shaking her head to try and rid herself of the thought, she continued to look at the pool as if it might tell her what she should do and how to act. In the dimness, she tried to see how far the water extended. She new that she had several choices before her. She could try and wade, (which she would rather not do) she could try and walk around it, or she could give up looking for Junel and try to find her way back to the path. None of these were especially inviting. Her head whirled round and round. confused, scared, and alone, she fell into an uneasy sleep. Dreaming strange things, unaware of what was taking place around her.

Elantir's punishment was over and now she was in the Wenoc looking for maps of Yequail and the Dreaded Mountains to the west. The winoc was a large room with many shelves packed with old scroles and maps. You could find almost anything you wanted to know about there. It had taken many years to collect all of the things. Many were writen by people who lived in the valley and who had lived through many of the first wars and trials. Elantir sighed deply as she took down another scroll to read. Opening it up, she was amazed to find that it was written in the commn tongue. Looking to see if she could find who theauthor was, she began leafing through it. Elantir read and read. It was the most amazing book she had ever seen. It told of wars and valor. Of ages long past and beautiful thing lost. After reading about a fourth of the way in, she continued to find that the destroyer behind all the wars and trials, was a man of imence hight and stature. They said that he had red eyes and black hair and weilded a mighty battle ax. Few could stand in his way. A deep desire to seek him out came suddenly of Elantir as she read that he had disappeared after being defeated in the Yequail. Staning up from her cramped position on the floor, she looked out the long window under which she had been reading and looked out. Her eyes saw the mountains surrounding her beloved home. A thousand questions ran through her mind. ' What if this person was still alive? If he was, he would probably want revenge on all those that defeated him. Would he seek out her valley? If he did, what would he do to it?' Turning back to the room, she was drawn to a scroll on a high shelf that was just out of her reach at the far end of the room. Climbing on a low stool, her fingers could just get a hold on it. Carfully lifting it down, Elantir began to look at the book that would change her life forever.

Junel rose slowly from laying in the mud to a half sitting half crouching position. What happened? She wondered while trying to rise higher. ' Hmmmm, thats funny, ' she thought ' I cant get any higher. Maybe I'm just to tiered. 'Falling back into the mud she closed her eyes. It felt good to lay down and her head hurt less in this positon. 'What thats smell? Oh well, it sure is nice.' Just before drifting off to sleep she opened her eyes and cought a breif glimce of something moving off to one side. Then she closed her eyes and went back into a drugged sleep while those around her could continue.

Crash! Loud noises isued in and out of the murky darkness which June seemed to be swimming through as she tried to breath through the cloth that was tightly bound about her mouth. What was that horrable smell? Opening her eyes she saw brown mud, lots of water and many paws, feet, and claws running many different directions, offten the same pair running again and again into her line of vision. Straining her head to left and then the right, she saw the reason for manick. The small pond was exspanding rapidly, and with is came a river of soft, sucking, mud. Twisting this way and that she tried to free herself of what ever was holding her. It did not feel like anything yet she could not move any direction. The water crept closer and closer. The nearer it became the faster it seemed to move. Closing her eyes, she resighned herself to her fate as all heros do when they are to die. Thinking of home she laid her head down and, even though she wanted to end bravely for her sisters sake, heald her breath. It is lucky for her that she did. For after she had gone under and her breath was running out, something, that didn't feel like anything, grasped, or rather tugged without toughing, her foot and pulled her out, stood her up, and wiped her eyes.

Elantir read untill the light was so bad she could hardly see anything in the room at all. Slowly seting down the scrole, she stood and walked in a slow circle, her hands running along the shelf as she passed it each time. Why had she not been shown this before? Why had no one told her? She went to seek out Lord Fenondolin, surly he would exslpain it all to her. Walking down the dimly lit passage ways, she gazed at it all, sucking every detail in as if it were the last time she would ever see it. And it was, though at the time she did not know it. After about ten minutes or so had passed, she came to the receving room, where guests were recieved. Silently slipping in, she was surprised to find it cold and emty. This room was never emty, at least for as long as she could remember. Going out and closing the door quietly, she walked out of doors, hoping that he would be there. Walking down the large marble steps into the garden, she walked int it, lost in her own thoughts. After awhile she desided just to walk among the flowers and plants. The garden was always lovly at night. She had always thought so, it was her favorite time to walk in the garden. The half moon trailed her silvery dress across the the dewy grass and through the trees as she made her nightly walk across the sky.
