If you went to your local Church and conducted interviews with the members, asking what the purpose of the Church is, or why does it exist, you may be more than a little amazed at what you hear, or even worse what you don't hear. Sometimes the silence is deafening.
Although there are many reason, in Scripture, I should like to offer at least a dozen or so for discussion. Perhaps the only feasible way would be to offer them one at a time.
One of the many purposes of the Church is to instruct other believers.
II Timothy 2:24: "And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, {patient: or, forbearing}
25 In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth;"
II Timothy 2:2: "And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also."
Matthew 28:19: "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: {teach : or, make disciples, or, Christians of all nations}
20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen."
Philippians 4:8: "Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. {honest: or, venerable}
9 Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you."
I Timothy 4:6: "If thou put the brethren in remembrance of these things, thou shalt be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine, whereunto thou hast attained."
I Timothy 5:17: "Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine."
Father, help us, as the Church, to take seriously our responsibility to teach and share with other believers what has been shown to us by the Holy Spirit.
