The following was asked by someone at the healthcare center where I serve as a pastor/chaplain.
This aged inquirer was earnestly seeking truth and not vague answers . . .
This was/is my response to the earnest seeker . . .
First, may you be blessed as you - "Search the scriptures" John 5:39
To 1 Corinthians 10:6, Now these things became our examples, to the intent that we should not lust after evil things as they also lusted.
Though I did not see the connection - I responded with:
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. - Galatians 5:22-23
And
5 But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, 6 to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, 7 to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love. 8 For if these things are yours and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 For he who lacks these things is shortsighted, even to blindness, and has forgotten that he was cleansed from his old sins. - 2 Peter 1:5-9
I further stated -
I believe the Fruit of the Spirit is one of the results of applying verses like Psalm 37:3-5, Psalm 37:7, Proverbs 3:5-6, Proverbs 16:3, 1 Peter 5:7, etc., and that the preceding verses are precepts or a guiding principle, instruction, that guides somebodys actions, especially one that guides moral behavior.
Note they do not have the, You shall or "You shall not" as with the ten commandments, nor the Thus says the Lord. Instead it is more like, Listen or Give heed Follow the instructions.
Jesus would again say to us -
If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them. - John 13:17
These precepts and promises are ours, but it requires diligence, and faithfulness on the part of the believer. If followed as stated the out come will be as stated, and they do require action. These are the blessings of the Lord, which makes one rich and no sorrow, and by following the instruction of he who understood and this Psalm will double the blessing(s) and add to the Christian life, but failure to be willingly do so, may result in the keenest and most miserable sorrow.
Trust in the Lord, and do good; dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness.
Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart.
Commit your way to the Lord, trust also in Him, and He shall bring it to pass. - Psalm 37:3-5
Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him; do not fret because of him who prospers in his way, because of the man who brings wicked schemes to pass. - Psalm 37:7
And adding -
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding;
In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths. - Proverbs 3:5-6
Commit your works to the LORD, and your thoughts will be established. - Proverbs 16:3
Casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you. - 1 Peter 5:7
Joshuas testimony as to the Lords word, promises, and precepts -
Behold, this day I am going the way of all the earth. And you know in all your hearts and in all your souls that not one thing has failed of all the good things which the LORD your God spoke concerning you. All have come to pass for you; not one word of them has failed. - Joshua 23:14
What about the Lords mercy and faithfulness -
Has His mercy ceased forever? Has His promise failed forevermore? - NO - Psalm 77:8
The Lord never forgets His promise -
For He remembered His holy promise, And Abraham His servant. - Psalm 105:42
I believe the Lords promises and faithfulness are new, daily -
They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness. - Lamentations3:23
All of Gods promises -
For all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us. - 2 Corinthians 1:20
But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. - Hebrews 11:6
If we treat such matters of Gods precepts and commands lightly, then we treat such as trivial and with almost no merit.
What do the scriptures say? Romans 4:3
12 For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. 13 And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account. - Hebrews 4:12-13
I left off with this concerning the Lord's promises, precepts and commands -
Then Jesus said to the centurion, "Go your way; and as you have believed, so let it be done for you." And his servant was healed that same hour. - Matthew 8:13
Thoughts or additional responsive help?
This aged inquirer was earnestly seeking truth and not vague answers . . .
Here is the question that was posed -
Where in the Scriptures does it say that we can claim the Old Testament promises as our own?
And cited this verse as an example:
Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass. - Psalms 37:5
Can a New Testament Christian claim this one promise for their own? Where in Scripture does it say that we can claim this as my own? Is there and exact answer. Someone might be able to provide an adequate answer Yet if asked about some theological nut to crack, it is not too much of a problem, but this one is a bit of a perplexity.
The inquirer first thought of I Corinthians 10:6:
Now these things became our examples, to the intent that we should not lust after evil things as they also lusted.
The inquirer said, Even though I get the impression that I might be close, I am not comfortable with this answer. Does anyone by chance have a better response to this query?
