Seeing as how I am American (living in the UK) and a Catholic, I can say this freely...

Many American Catholics are pathetic whiners that are spoiled rotten and need a lesson in the Cross.

Abigail Palmer explains this very well here: http://www.americanprowler.com/dsp_article.asp?art_id=8083

American Catholics are the most spoiled Catholics on the planet. A Catholic in Baghdad just hopes that his church won't be bombed this Sunday; Sudanese Catholics hope that they can face another day without brutal, unspeakable religious persecution. In many of the dioceses of the world, a roof on the church or running water would be nice. And we, in all of our prosperity, want more ease. We can go to church when we like, say what we like, do what we like.

Good article. Thanks.

One of the reasons Catholics (I'm not one of them) in America are where they are is because of the history of anti-Catholic nativism here. The charge was always that Catholics were taking orders from Rome. From what I understand, Rome did back off and let the American bishops go further their own way than it may have liked.

If the Catholics are sometimes disturbed by the " United States Conference of Catholic Bishops" consider how they puzzle non-Catholics. We are familiar with church doctrine. Yet we turn on TV and see Bishops who are more liberal in doctrine than many protestants.

Btw...the nativist view of the church was never confined to the South as it is commonly said today. The northeast still harbors fears of Rome. We can see it in how the New York Times (and even the Providence Journal) reacted to the election of Pope Benedict XVI.

I can say this with all the love in my heart: This can be said of all American (or western) Christians. We have no idea what true persecution is.
God bless.

Yep, I include myself in that category. :sigh: But the reason I posted this is in regards to the supposed "oppressiveness" of the new Pope.

It is true, there are alot of spoiled Christians in America.

But don't think for a second that our financial success breeds spoiled Christians.
We don't need to be under some terrorist to appeciate our faith and life.

But there are alot of mature Christians here as well, that do alot of good.
When 9/11 happened, Christians gave so much money, that the presidents wife said they have more than enough.

I wouldn't see that financial success alone breeds spoiled Christians, it helps, but as has been previously pointed out a lack of persecution is a bad thing for the church. The church is always strongest and at its most vibrant when it is persecuted. The Church in the west has gotten fat and lazy in a relatively persecution free environment. Christians are still the majority in most countries, but many still have a persecution complex.
