You assume that the temple was destroyed "so that grace was by faith , not of works." Grace was never by works. We are all unprofitable servants and no amount of works is enough to save us. We all rely on the atonement for our salvation. We are not saved by works and neither are we saved without works. It is not possible to love our neighbor as ourselves without works. The parable of the good Samaritan as taught by Jesus Christ taught helps us to understand that we are to help those i need. Those who love Jesus keep the commandments: (New Testament | John 14:15) 15 ¶ If ye love me, keep my commandments. In the temple we give our ancestors the opportunity receive the necessary ordinances they need for salvation such as baptism: (New Testament | John 3:3 - 5) 3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. 4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born? 5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. (New Testament | 1 Corinthians 15:29) 29 Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not at all? why are they then baptized for the dead? (New Testament | 1 Peter 3:20 - 22) 20 Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water. 21 The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ: 22 Who is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of God; angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto him. These ordinances are not forced on anyone. They can be accepted or rejected. God will force no man to heaven. We do these ordinances out of love for our ancestors who were not given the opportunity while they were alive.
