Suddenly a deeply cloaked figure had appeared in the garden, though small of frame yet imposing in its presence, and what little of its face could be seen was pale, ghastly and deeply wrinkled. Mathonwy had mentioned the tail - Kuillia saw none, yet he had no doubt this was the one he was to fight. It seemed the cloaked figure had all but sacrificed his body to gain dark control over the minds of others.

Kuillia began to take tentative steps towards it. But as the figure saw his intent it let out a low purr, and suddenly Kuillia found himself staggering backwards, not hit by physical force but by mental power ... the very image of dereliction itself. Loneliness and pain and anger and jealousy and hatred seemed to surround his mind, entrapping it. From the corners of his eyes he saw the others hold back, as if unsure, but the looming assassin seemed to take up his whole field of vision, seeming to exude brilliance like an angel of salvation.

Your struggle is so empty ... so meaningless. Come: I offer you, me. Cease your meaningless fight, and let your mind be enraveled in mine ... for resistance is futile.

Kuillia felt the words sink into his mind, a teasing offer, a deadly toxin, and now he felt himself being drawn towards this "promise". He felt his spirit weaken. Then suddenly, a question burst into his mind:

Do you have anything worth living for? ... Do you have anything worth dying for?

And that pierced through the gloom, for a split second he saw what was at stake. He was Good and this abomination opposite him was Evil and the cosmic struggle subsumed who he was and was all that mattered now. He saw the truth for just long enough to break free and charge towards the assassin, and now his motions were above thought and above mind, his strength an instrument in the great power of Good...

Aneirin watched Kullia and felt as though her breath were being sucked from her throat. "The Priestess sent assassins to...to kill Mathonwy." she gasped, backing up. She wanted to say more, but somehow she couldn't. Her eyes were riveted on the cloaked figure, and she couldn't break her gaze.

Davil fluttered above the party watching for her chance to strike, when she felt a rush of wind coming through the air right toward her. She saw it coming- bursting into water droplets just as the blades whizzed through the air which she had just occupied. She reformed and looked about her; anxiety riddled her face. She would have began sweating if kelpies had been capable of such a function.

She spotted it in the distance earlier than last- she was ready. Just as it grew close, Davil tightened every muscle in her small blue body, pulled back her head, arms, and legs. From this exertion came a burst of blue light that seemed to quickly harden into a glowing blue glasslike baubble around the kelpie.

Her assailant had no time to react- its blades hit the glasslike ball encasing the kelpie and made an echoing grating noise. Blue sparks issued from the collision, and whatever it was that had charged was now hurling backwards into the air, using the force of his blades' ricochet to his advantage. On Davil's glasslike ball there were some thirteen gauges. The baubble had barely saved her this time- a second attack would shatter it instantly.

"Tenkana!" cried Davil. "The Claw of the Darkling is here- look lively!"

Mathonwy noticed her shock; he had expected it to come. He knew that for some reason his power was hated by the people of the Citadel, and now that their high priestess had seen that power, that he too was hated, and so made a target for these assassins. Hence he wasn't so much shocked as he was confused, and a little sad. But fighting back these emotions for now was critical, because before him stood three of the biggest challenges of his power he had ever faced.

"Try not to think of that now Aneirin- the more you are suceptible to the Tail's powers. I destroyed the first set of chains he imposed on us and made it impossible to wrap us all simultaneously in that enchantment, but he can still reach each of us individually," Mathonwy said in Aeneirin's mind.

Tenkana heard the voice and looked up. He saw the claws coming back around to hit the glass bubble. He fired two fireballs at the claws, sending them off in a different trajectory, but that was only temporary. They still came back around for the bubble. Tenkana then decided to try something else that he had never really tried before. He fired two ice bolts at the claws, which completely froze them, and then watched as they fell to the ground, shattering into thousands of pieces. Round 1: Tenkana & friends: 1 Bad guys: zelch. Thought Tenkana, trying to keep a positive but wary mind.
