Preparations For The Sacrifice
Exodus 12:3 Speak to all the congregation of Israel, saying: On the tenth of this month every man shall take for himself a lamb, according to the house of his father, a lamb for a household.
4 And if the household is too small for the lamb, let him and his neighbor next to his house take it according to the number of the persons; according to each man’s need you shall make your count for the lamb.
5 Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year. You may take it from the sheep or from the goats.
6 Now you shall keep it until the fourteenth day of the same month. Then the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it at twilight.
The lamb is kept at home for the interval to make him precious to the children, because the Memorial is for the generation following.
14 So this day shall be to you a memorial; and you shall keep it as a feast to the Lord throughout your generations. You shall keep it as a feast by an everlasting ordinance.
21 Then Moses called for all the elders of Israel, and said unto them, Draw out and take you a lamb according to your families, and kill the passover. KJV
21 Then Moses called for all the elders of Israel and said to them, Pick out(?) and take lambs for yourselves according to your families, and kill the Passover. NKJV
‘Picked out’=Ma-sak [4900] draw, to be drawn(out)
Genesis 49:28 Then there passed by Midianites merchantmen; and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmeelites for twenty pieces of silver: and they brought Joseph into Egypt.
The Observance, and the Children of Israel
The modern translation of masak; ‘pick out’ disguises this most profound truth. The Lord was preparing the people to draw near to Him at Sinai. The lamb would be removed from the flock and led home by a short cord, and tied to a stake.
Now consider the impact of tying a baby lamb in the yard on the young ones; (Of course, older children would become more and more familiar). That lamb would become precious to them, so that when they saw him served on a table (for the lamb was roasted whole, without a bone broken), they would be anguished by the sight! Now, consider the emotions that would arise in the youngest of the children. “What have you done to baby lambsy??
Exodus 12:
26 And it shall be, when your children say to you, ‘What do you mean by this service?’ 27 that you shall say, ‘It is the Passover sacrifice of the Lord, who passed over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt when He struck the Egyptians and delivered our households.’ ” So the people bowed their heads and worshiped.
For all the saints, the Lamb of God is the precious child of God, Christ Jesus.
1 Peter 2:6 Therefore it is also contained in the Scripture,Behold, I lay in Zion
A chief cornerstone, elect, precious, and he who believes in Him will by no means be put to shame.” 7 Therefore, to you who believe precious; but to those who are disobedient, The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone,
Only the Gospel of John makes this distinction
John 1:29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!
The Passover Lamb, as one of the first year, denotes the child, not just a servant
Acts 4:24-30 And when they heard that, they lifted up their voice to God with one accord, and said, Lord, thou art God, which hast made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all that in them is: Who by the mouth of thy servant David hast said, Why did the heathen rage, and the people imagine vain things? The kings of the earth stood up, and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord, and against his Christ. For of a truth against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together, For to do whatsoever thy hand and thy counsel determined before to be done. And now, Lord, behold their threats: and grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word, By stretching forth thine hand to heal; and that signs and wonders may be done by the name of thy holy child Jesus.
