Hot cross buns, easter eggs: pagan symbols?

Easter is a pagan festival. If Easter isn't really about Jesus, then what is it about? Today, we see a secular culture celebrating the spring equinox, whilst religious culture celebrates the resurrection. However, Christianity let heathen festivals come in and made a acceptance of ancient pagan practises, one which today is known as Easter. The general symbolic story of the death of the son (sun) on a cross (the constellation of the Southern Cross) and his rebirth, overcoming the powers of darkness, was a well worn story in the ancient world. There were plenty of parallel, rival resurrected pagan gods too.

The Sumerian goddess Inanna, or Ishtar, was hung naked on a stake, and was subsequently resurrected and ascended from the underworld. One of the oldest resurrection myths is Egyptian Horus. Born on 25 December, Horus and his damaged eye became symbols of life and rebirth. Mithras was born on what we now call Christmas day, and his followers celebrated the spring equinox. Even as late as the 4th century AD, the Sol Invictus, associated with Mithras, was the last great pagan cult the church faced and rather than reject it let it come into the church with its sun worship. Dionysus was a divine child, resurrected and Dionysus also brought the mother goddess, Semele, back to life.

The Cybele cult flourished on today's Vatican Hill. They held that Cybele's lover Attis, was born of a virgin, died and was reborn annually. This spring festival began as a day of blood on Black Friday, rising to a crescendo after three days, in rejoicing over the resurrection. There was violent conflict on Vatican Hill in the early days of Christianity between the Jesus worshippers and pagans who quarrelled over whose God was the true, and whose the imitation. Christianity came to an accommodation with the pagan Spring festival and used it to bring in unconverted pagans. Although we see no celebration of Easter in the New Testament, the church in Rome celebrated it and used its power to spread it throughout Christiandom, and today we see many churches offering "sunrise services" at Easter – an obvious pagan solar celebration. ?

All the things about Easter are pagan. Bunnies are a leftover from the pagan festival of Eostre, a great northern goddess whose symbol was a rabbit or hare. Exchange of eggs is an ancient custom, celebrated by many cultures. Hot cross buns are very ancient too. In the Old Testament we see the Israelites baking sweet buns for an idol, and religious leaders trying to put a stop to it. The early church clergy also tried to put a stop to sacred cakes being baked at Easter. In the end, in the face of defiant cake-baking pagan women, they gave up and it swept into the church as it fell into apostasy and turned against the true believers which it then persecuted.

Easter is essentially a pagan festival which was celebrated with gifts and the ancient symbolism still is held by many who call themselves Christian.

Can you name one,"Christian Holiday" that doesn't have pagan origins?

Dec 25th, easter, and all the other non Biblical days the pagan Roman church follow, as well as 95 percent of "christians" have pagan origins..don't follow them...the only true ones are God's seventh day Sabbath day, and any other days in the Bible that are actually commanded and blessed by God. :)

Unfortunately the Early Church as set up by Jesus and his follower was hijacked by the Church of Rome and Constantine who mixed it with Pagan beliefs to get away from its Jewish roots and make it more palatable to be adopted. Unfortunately in doing so it has deceived many of the very elect.

You are correct that Easter, and also Christmas are not Godly. They are pagan festivals and not orthodox or biblical in nature. They are not God's holy feasts.

Jesus never once put a Christmas tree up in his house. In fact he wasn't even born at what we know as Christmas time on the 25th December.

Nobody knows the exact date he was born on, and if it were important to know when he was born in the flesh then God would have seen fit to record that date down for us in the Bible but he did not. What we do know is that it must have been sometime around the Feast of Tabernacles in late September or early October time.

God's Holy Feast days as shown in the Bible are:

Passover
The Feast of Unleavened Bread
Pentecost
The Feast of Trumpets
The Day of Atonement
The Feast of Tabernacles
The Last Great Day

Jesus never once put up a Christmas tree in his house although he does actually mention this practice and not in a good way!

"Yet this you have: you hate the works of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate" Rev 2:6

What were the practices of the Nicolaitans? It was worshiping trees and totem poles etc. It is where Saint Nicolas gets his name from.

Easter is only mentioned once in the Bible in Act 12:4. It is a deliberate mistranslation in the KJV by King James' interpereters. I would not like to be in their shoes on judgement day that's for sure. In all other translation it is translated correctly to Passover from the Greek "Pascha".

See: Strong's Greek: 3957. ????? (pascha) -- the Passover, the Passover supper or lamb

And Acts 12:4 After arresting him, he put him in prison, handing him over to be guarded by four squads of four soldiers each. Herod intended to bring him out for public trial after the Passover.

So yes you are completely correct. Easter, fluffy bunnies, chocolate easter eggs, fertility etc have nothing whatsoever to do with Jesus and is not biblical. It is unorthodox theology and pagan in nature.

To address the final point of similar instances of things happening in other cultures, we also see this in the Bible too. An event in the past foreshadows an future event. We see it with Abraham and his son Isaac and then God and his son Jesus. We also see examples were Satan does something to try and emulate and deceive others away from God and cause confusion.

We see it in ancient Babylon with Nimrod and his wife and child. Ungodly people, who thought they were God's, under Satan's influence, who tried to replace God and follow their own rules, and who were attempting to emulate God's plan for mankind's salvation thousands of years later.

Its very important to know that Satan is extremely clever and cunning. He was created by God as the cherub Lucifer. He was the single most intelligent, powerful, clever being ever created by God yet rebelled against his maker and took one third of all the angels with him. Adam grossly underestimated Satan in the Garden of Eden. Who is to know what Satan knows about God's plan of salvation for mankind and how he is misleading the World on a path of destruction and through wide gates to hell?

Satan can appear as an angel of light to deceive even the very elect - those who carry Christs name i.e. Christians. Satan will mix a lie in with some truths in order to take people away from the Word of God, such is his cunning and deceitfulness. Satan is no joke and is an extremely powerful being who presently sits on the throne of the Earth.

God started Lucifer out with everything going for him. He sealed up the sum of wisdom, beauty and perfection. He was perfect in all his ways from the instant he was created until iniquity rebellion, lawlessness was found in him (Ezek. 28:15). He had been trained and was thoroughly experienced in administration of the government of God at the very throne of the endless universe! He was one of the two cherubs whose wings covered the throne of God the most high (Ezek. 28:14; Ex. 25:20).

He was created gloriously beautiful perfect in beauty, but he allowed vanity to seize him. Then he turned to erroneous reasoning. God’s law the basis of God’s government is the way of love outgoing concern for the good and welfare of others, love toward God in obedience, humility and worship the way of giving, sharing, helping, cooperating. He reasoned that competition would be better than cooperation. It would be an incentive to excel, to try harder, to accomplish. There would be more pleasure in serving self and more enjoyment.

He turned against God’s law of love. He became jealous of God, envious, and resentful against God. He allowed lust and greed to fill him, and he became bitter. This inspired a spirit of violence! He deliberately became his Maker’s adversary and enemy. That was his choice, not God’s yet allowed by God! God changed the adversary’s name to what he became, Satan the devil Satan means adversary, competitor, enemy.

Satan directed his supernatural powers henceforth to evil. He became bitter not only against God, but against God’s law. He used his subtle wiles of deception to lead the angels under him into disloyalty, rebellion and revolt against the Creator and finally into a war of aggression and violence to attempt to depose God and seize the throne of the universe.

As long as Lucifer remained loyal and administered the government of God faithfully, this earth was filled with wonderful and perfect peace. The angels were vigorously happy to the extent of joy!

The law of God’s government is the way of life that causes and produces peace, happiness, prosperity and well-being. Sin is the way of life that has caused all existing evils. The penalty of sin by the angels was not death for God had made them immortal spirit beings who cannot die. What God gave them was this earth as their abode and opportunity to qualify to possess and beautify the entire universe.

Their penalty (they are still awaiting final judgment up to now) was disqualification of their grand opportunity, perversion of mind, and a colossal earth wide cataclysm of destruction wreaked upon this earth. As a result, the earth came to the condition briefly described in Genesis 1:2.

Lucifer was created a perfect bringer of light. Now he became author of darkness. The rebellion of angels that sinned (II Pet. 2:4-6; Jude 6-7; Isa.14:l2-l5; Ezek. 28:12-17) brought this extreme cataclysm to the earth. How must God have looked at this situation after the colossal debacle of Lucifer and the angels that sinned?

I think it is entirely possible that Satan may have known something about God's plan for salvation of mankind, and may have attempted to emulate that in order to deceive, even prior to God sending his son as a sacrifice. I wouldn't put anything past Satan. Scripture shows us just how clever, devious and dangerous he is.

Jesus tells his followers to:

“Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy[a] that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few." Matthew 7:13-14

It is that gate we should aim for, and we can do that by following God's instruction in the Bible. We can do it by giving up the traditions of men e.g. Easter, Christmas and the Pagan things of this world practiced by many and instead concentrating on God and his holy days and feasts.

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is--his good, pleasing and perfect will. Romans 12:2
