Uncounted legions of glimmering white stars hung on the icy air, bright, yet piercingly remote. Tarree's jagged breathing frosted in the chill, and she shuddered violently, pressing herself down against the hard earth. A furtive upward glance told her that he was still there, silhouetted against the night sky, searching for her. Relaxing, she let her head droop slightly, although her eyes never left the horseman. Long before, she had ceased to think rationally. In the fight for survival, she had forgotten logic and had survived on her instincts.

A distant clatter of hooves on rock told her the others were moving away, but the one in her sight lingered, as if knowing that she was out there, watching him. A faint call lilted on the air, and the horse turned under the hand of its rider and dissapeared from view. Tarree allowed herself a hoarse breath or two, then she pushed herself up from the tiny hollow and raced down the steep slope, dodging the charred stumps that pushed themselves up out of the dangerous quagmire until she reached a tangled thicket of several half-dead bushes. No sounds reached her from the ridge of hills behind her.

Peering from her hiding place, she inspected the surrounding regions. Behind the hills to the west, there was a range of mountains, rising to sheer and unmeasured heights at their peaks, sharp as needles. For the world was still young, and the mountains were not dull and weary. Those mountains were called the Thazak-dûn, the Dark Mountains, and the foothills were named the Dûnlands, and they were patrolled relentlessly by those that would kill her and all of her kin. She was in a depression, filled with uncharted marsh. Only Tarree knew the one permanent path through, and it was always difficult, never reliable. To the North, the land rose to a flat, desolate plateau, sandy and parched. To the South, the land dropped away in a series of steppes to the flat, rich-soiled plains of the Odőche, often flooded completely by the Ravíe, which flowed down from the sea. To the East lay her path, frought with ruin. The Thazak-kân, (mountains of shadow) barred her way, long and low, black and barran. On the flat peak of the highest mountain -- Mahkhar-kân -- was the dark stronghold of the Nameless Evil. Beyond them lay what remained of the Free Lands, The regions of Pelorre and Bellanc, and the kingdom of Erandor, and the elf-realm of Lindon.

As she shifted slightly, a gleam of starlight caught the jewl bound to her forehead, a white gleam. The stone told that she was an elf-maid, of the land beyond the mountains.

Tarree found it ironic that she had escaped from the Dark Mountains to be hemmed in by the Mountains of Shadow.

Somehow, she must escape. Somehow, she must reach her fellows and deliver her message.

Tarree wove her way between clumps of twisted growth, until at last she reached a small island amidst the bog. Several huge trees had been felled by wind long ago, and their huge trunks had remained half-out of the marsh. Solid earth had built up around them and a few stunted trees and dense undergrowth gave perfect cover from sight. She had been here once before, and so now she knew where she would hid. A depression remained between two huge trunks, tree-roots laced above. Soil had gathered there, making a small cave away from the wind. Swiftly, she crawled in and curled up, letting sleep sweep over her.

It was night again when she awoke, and the moon had not yet risen. Hunger gnawed ceaselessly at her stomach, but she pushed on, nibbling the last of her waybread. Later that day, she killed a fen-fowl and risked a fire, sheltered underneath a dense thicket of trees to thin out the smoke. She feasted, then moved on again, in case someone might have seen the reed star of her fire. For two days she slept in the open, protected only by her elvish cloak and stealth.

Then she turned North, hoping to elude both the dark mountain and capture. That night, she stumbled wearily down into a small ravine, with a trickle of water flowing down from the broken rim of the plateau. A small oasis of green and growing things was there, and she drank deeply of the stream, her pointed ears attuned to everything around her.

Kiersten ran through the night, aware that she was being followed. "But I didn't take the bread!" she had insisted, but they wouldn't listen! They were so sure that she had stolen the loaf of bread, they were willing to kill and innocent girl.

Kia was a warrior, but not whne she was outnumbered twenty to one. She kept running, and made the mistake of stopping for a few seconds. They weren't that far behind her, but she couldn't go on. She had to stop. When she did, they grabbed ahold of her, laughing and talking of what they would do to her. She grabbed her knife, but didn't dare pull it from it's place, until thr right time approached. And it came quick.

The guard looked away, and with one quick swipe of her knife, he was dead and she was on the loose once again. She came to a small oasis, but landed on the ground with a 'thud' when one of the men jumped ontop of her. She grabbed her knife, and tried to roll over, but he held her on the ground with all of his strength, which was more than she had.

He grabbed her knife, and thre it to the side. The other men had arrived now, and were laughing, as Kia's hands were tied. She managed to kick the man in the face. It stunned him long enough for her to grab another knife from a hidden pouch in her skirt. She stabbed the man in the shoulder, and was about to begin running, but the other men grabbed her and tied her up.
