  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The New Covenant is the Everlasting Covenant being administered in this dispensation !

In other words, the blood of the Everlasting Covenant per Heb 13:

20Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant,

And the blood of the New Teastament Matt 26:

28For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.

Are the same blood, shed by the Same Person, the great shepherd of the sheep.

Along with:
Brothers, let me take an example from everyday life. Just as no one can set aside or add to a human covenant that has been duly established, so it is in this case. The promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. The Scripture does not say "and to seeds," meaning many people, but "and to your seed," meaning one person, who is Christ. Gal 3:15-16

The promises of God are conditional. When we do our part then we can be sure God is fairfull and true & He will always perform His part of the covenant. Look at any passage and we can see the promise. For example in Psalm 3 we see if we keep the commands of God in our heart, this will prolong our years and bring us prosperity. If we do our part of the promise, we can be sure that God will perform and do His part of the promise.
1 My son, do not forget my teaching,
but keep my commands in your heart,
2 for they will prolong your life many years
and bring you prosperity.

He has ALREADY performed HIS part, our part is to be "IN CHRIST" which we are. Galatians, 3:29 "And if you belong to Christ, you are Abraham's offspring, heirs according to promise."

That's why it's a better covenant, it was sealed by the blood of GOD.

I believe that the ancients had a different understanding of covenant than we do today. Anciently there existed “kingdoms” that were presided over by Suzerains. To become a citizen of a kingdom (son or daughter of the Suzerain one would enter into a covenant with the Suzerain. The covenant was entered into via an initiation rite that was performed either by the Suzerain or his appointed proxy that performed the rite in the name and authority of the Suzerain as thought they were the Suzerain – often in such rites they would speak in the first person of the Suzerain.

The initiate would covenant to obey all the laws on the Kingdom given by the Suzerain and to always remain loyal to the Suzerain. In return the Suzerain granted three things:
First – a promised land (a place within the kingdom) .
Second – Protection from enemies (to save from threatening enemies)
Third – enduring posterity – privilege status for one’s children – related to ancient beliefs of eternal life.

Those that were not loyal to the Suzerain – ether by not obeying his laws or by assisting his enemies were punished according to their crime. If they were not punished by death their eye were burned out and or their ears burned off. Thus they were made death and or blind. Jesus makes very interesting reference to this punishment when he spoke of those that have ears and hear not and those that have eyes and see not. I believe this is a direct reference to those that pretend to covenant but are not loyal to G-d and not obedient to his commandments.

I will say that I have only briefly read similar thoughts, as in the example of Hitterite? treaties.

Keep in mind though that the type of covenant you are describing above is similar to that given to Israel through Moses the mediator i.e. Israel agreed to obey all the commandments of God (which of course they could not perform...)

Take note though that when God covenanted with Abraham, Abraham did not promise to keep the obligations of the covenant.
It was God who swore upon Himself that he would bless Abraham, and that if He did not keep His promises, then the covenant curse (death) should fall upon Him (you can see this ceremony in where God walks between the carcases).

Note also that in the beginning of the gospel narratives, one person mentions that with the arrival of the Messiah, God "has remembered his covenant with Abraham".

One thing I do see is that when Jesus mentioned the "new covenant" to his hearers, they -being Jews- must have had in mind that spoken in Jeremiah, which they would have been looking for its day.

There was another "everlasting covenant" that God made with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob mentioned in Genesis 18.

Romans 11 speaks of how Israel is blinded, in part, until the fulness of the Gentiles comes in. It says they are enemies where the gospel is concerned but loved because of the partriarchs.

Therefore, Israel has the first everlasting covenant which I believe is why God turns to them again when the church is removed.

Yes, Christ came to do away with the old covenant and its laws, and to establish the new covenant with its laws...

Hebrews 7:12
For when there is a change in the priesthood, there is necessarily a change in the law as well.

Now we obey the law of the Spirit (in obeying the leading of the Spirit), and not the law carved in stone tablets...but there will always be a law of God (law of faith, law of the Spirit, law of Christ) that we are to walk in obedience to.

The Isrealites weren't looking for a NC Messiah they were looking for a physical deliverance from their masters. They had zero a spriitual mind set in this matter. The only thing that mattered was the here and now. Pretty much the same today.

The New Covenant is the manifestation of the Everlasting Covenant, both sealed by Christ blood Matt 26:

28For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.

Heb 13:

20Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant,

That is incorrect. The "church removed"? What a strange unscriptural statement.

Yes, unbelieving Israel are enemies of the gospel as always.
Israel "loved" is ONLY those who are of the patriarchs, which is Abraham Isaac Jacob, which is ONLY those in Christ.

There is NO covenant that God made to Abraham that hasn't been fulfilled to Israel in Christ.

(Gal 3:16) Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ.

Simple :)

GE:

Difference is, the BIBLE knows an 'Israel' "after the flesh" as well as a "spiritual Israel", whereas it knows of a "Seventh Day Sabbath of the LORD God" and of NO, quoting you, "spiritual Sabbath".

You see, the Bible never confuses "the Rest of God" with "a keeping of the Sabbath Day remaining valid for the People of God" --- whether in the Old or in the New Testament.

Believe in your "SPIRITUAL Sabbath"; it's OK with me; I don't know with God.

The words "spiritual Israel" are just as absent from the Bible as "spiritual Sabbath". You can make up just about any doctrine you want to if you deviate from what the Bible actually says. The Bible never says the weekly Sabbath observance of rest and sacrifice is given to anyone but the actual, physical nation of Israel as a sign and covenant.

So what is the basis for a spiritual Israel? I don't know of one.
