  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The name "Lucifer"?

Never, whilst reading my bible, have I encountered "Lucifer" as Satan's real name, so where did that name come from? Which verse is Satan named "Lucifer" in?

Sorry if I've got the wrong section, this is a pretty big message board and can be tricky to navigate.

From the Wiki:

Lucifer is a Latin word, literally meaning "light-bearer", that was used as a name for the "day star" or "Morning Star" that precedes the rising of the sun. The name is frequently given to the Devil in Christian convention. Use of this name in reference to a fallen angel stems from a particular interpretation of Isaiah 14:3-20, a passage that speaks of someone who is given the name of "Day Star" or "Morning Star" (in Latin, Lucifer) as fallen from heaven.[2] In 2 Peter 1:19 and elsewhere, the same Latin word lucifer is used of the morning star with no relation to the devil. However, in post-New Testament writings the Latin word Lucifer has often been used as a name for the devil.
And actually, Jesus says at the end of Revelation "I am the Morning Star", so I think that the reading of Satan as "Lucifer" may be a bit suspect, personally.

As it shows above, Morning Star literally means "Lucifer".

Personally, I believe the proper name for the Devil is "Satan" or adversary... or also, as in Revelation "Apollyon" or "Destroyer".

That is, the Destroying Angel mentioned in the Books of Moses as well.

In context it seems to be saying in Isaiah - posing the Devil as the "King of Babylon" who came against Israel - that the Devil was the prince of the world... but in the future, a new prince (the King), a new and the real Morning Star will arise.

So, really, it does not seem that the "name" should be "Morning Star", but rather as more of a symbol.

There are two Morning Stars as there are to Rocks, etc. There is our Christ and there is the anti-christ...the instead of Christ. That is what is being said in one of Satan's many names being Lucifer. It prepares us by knowing he comes pretending to be Christ. Scripture tells us that the fake comes first and we must wait for the true Savior.

The name "Lucifer" is found in Isaiah 14:12 in the English translations of both the King James Bible and the New King James Version. It is also found in the Latin Vulgate.

"lucifer" was originally a Latin term meaning "light bearer" and not a personal name. The King James translators decided that this verse (Isa 14:12) referred to Satan, and they also used the Latin term "lucifer" as a reference to him. In the English language, it eventually became a synonym for Satan.

Lucifer is Latin for "star of the morning." Some believe Isaiah is giving a description of the fall of Satan, but the passage in Isaiah 14 clearly applies to the king of Babylon, who is later used as a type (prefirguration) of the Beast, who will lead the Babylon of the last days (Rev. 13:4, 17:3).
