  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I was thinking, it might be an interesting thread topic discussing how we spend our morning commute. Do we listen to Alexander Scourby narrate the KJV Bible, do we pray, do we listen to secular music, or are we texting on our cell phones. There are no right or wrong answers here. Just a friendly exchange among brothers and sisters in Christ. I'll start it off, to give you an example.

I have about a 40-45 minute commute. While I sometimes pray first before I do anything, this morning I didn't. I forgot. I listened to a couple of alternative CCM songs on Air One then switched to a CD I hadn't listened to before, a recent purchase. While I usually listen to CCM, this morning I played a secular album, Robin Trower's Live album. Robin Trower is one of the finest guitarists ever. I really like the British Blues of this period from groups like Traffic, Cream, Led Zeppelin, et al.

Now it's your turn.

I also drive in a car almost all day at work and get to listen to Christian radio and cd/mp3's. Sometimes I'll listen to Christian music or carefully selected country. I really don't listen to secular music anymore buth that is just me. I love listening to solid, sound and deep sermons. Constantly hitting the rewind.

I drive while my 25yo daughter has music on, but really spends the time chatting with me. While we have never had family devotion and rarely attend church together, we talk about theology and God multiple times daily. So, without any attempt to swerve into it, God comes up all the time with all my kids and wife. We also frequently discuss politics.

Everybody in my nuclear family is HIGHLY opinionated, and thanks to the Blessed Trinity, fundamentalist Christians to the core. It has been a marvelous Gift of God that while never structuring "religion" into my family, everyone of my kids and wife just bubble over with excitement and SERIOUSLY thought out opinions on Scripture, Godly living and so on. Why God has chosen to bless someone like me who as head of household put so little effort, time or care into the Church or even God's service with such strong a strong vibrant Christian nuclear family is amazing to me. Unfortunately, my or my wifes extended family is probably not saved, despite my trying, with perhaps one exception.

When I drive alone, I search for McArthur, or Sproul or other theology types. Failing that I go to a conservative political talk radio. I really need to get on one of those CD lending libraries. Very little contemporary Christian music attracts me, and much positively repels me. Often it is in fact the very message, and not the music, that angers me. Where are the songs ablut God's JUSTICE, about REPENTANCE? "Come just as you are?" Are you kidding me???? Unconditional forgiveness is NOWHERE taught in Scripture, it is the modern invention of Laodicea. The Gospel is REPENT, THEN be Saved. Sure, the Holy Spirit makes you repent, but still REPENTANCE, and a contrite broken heart comes BEFORE salvation. And what is expected BEFORE you forgive your brother 70X7 times?

"IF my brother ASKS for FORGIVENESS..."

So where in the Scriptures are we taught that we MUST forgive the unrepentant????
The ignorant, yes "Forgive them Father, for they KNOW NOT waht they do." Those soldiers were following orders. Not to take vengeance, of course not "Vengeance is MINE, sayeth the Lord." That someone may, from the desire of his heart CHOOSE to forgive, sure as Stephen said while being stoned in Acts "Father, hold not this sin against them."

But modern Christian songs seem full of the "unconditional surrender" message which is simply NOT Scriptural! Yes God is Love. But He is also JUSTICE, a Jealous Gad and an All Consuming Fire. Everybody likes to pick a Psalmd here or there to set to music. But what about the imprecatory Psalms where David prays the skulls of his enemie's children be dashed on stones? Have THOSE psalms and prayers for the DESTRUCTION of God's enemies suddenly dropped out of the Canon?

Most modern Christianity preaches half a Gospel, and the songs reflect that. Most preaching and songs on Christian have become repellent to me. They look like salt, and taste like chalk. Most Christian preachers have become ashamed of half the Gospel. My current denomination, the PCA, is begining a slide towards the same garbage. It nauseates me. I am in good company, it nauseates our Lord such that He will vomit it our.

Great thread.

My morning commute is only about 15 minutes long, so not much time for sermons. I usually have the local Christian radio station on, though I do at times either turn it down or change the station because of the lyrical content. For instance, Amy Grant has a new song out that I simply cannot stand. Occasionally a song will come on that I like, but that's about it.

Thank you, everyone, for posting those links to the sermon sites! ^_^

I have a 25-minute commute. Some mornings I listen to classical music or opera on CD (ever since my mp3 player took its tragic plunge into a cup of coffee).

On those mornings when I have a particularly trying day ahead of me, I'll just leave the music off and pray for guidance and strength...most days I need that a whole lot more than I need Bach! :)

I have about a 150 yard commute. Sometimes I'll listen to podcasts by Glenn Beck or WretchedRadio or Cato Institute or ReasonTV. If it's raining, then I just take the golf cart. If I don't have anything pressing or not waiting on a vendor or getting a delivery ready, sometimes I'll just throw a saddle on Traveller and go for a ride or go hiking with the dogs.
