Morning came with even more noise and exuberance than the day before. Alex woke up early with a smile on her face. Changing quickly, she went downstairs. Breakfast was already ready and waiting for them. She grabbed a plate and made her way into the hall where she knew she’d find Angel.
All the orphans were gathered around the tree. Each had his own gift from “Santa” and were opening them, big smiles spreading across their faces. Alex smiled. She had been the only one in the hall when the St. Joseph’s people had come back and dropped off the gifts. However, that was a secret she intended to keep.
Alex watched as angel bounded over to her, a package in hand.
“Merry Christmas,” said Alex. “What did Santa bring you?”
“This!” said Angel excitedly, holding up a cute pink and purple, flower print dress with a matching sunhat and white sandals.
“Cute,” said Alex smiling. Angel beamed.
“And then I found this! It’s labeled to the both of us!” Alex’s curiosity was piqued. She had never received a combined present before. She could sense Angel’s anticipation rolling of her in waves and smiled.
“Open it,” she said.
Angel ripped the colored paper off the small box and opened it. Inside there was a note that read:
Dear Alex and Angel,
Merry Christmas! Report to the main office. Your gift awaits you there!
Sincerely,
Santa Clause
Angel looked at Alex for an answer. Alex, just as confused as the little girl shrugged her shoulders.
“Let’s go see what this is all about.” Angel nodded, and the two left the hall, hand-in-hand, and made their way up the stairs to the main office.
Angel held tightly onto her present and in one hand and Alex’s right hand with the other. The two knocked on the door of the main office. “Come in!” said a voice from inside. Angel looked at Alex apprehensively, but Alex just smiled encouragingly and opened the door.
Inside the office, Alex could see the owner talking excitedly with two adults whose backs were turned to the girls, in the corner of the room. When the owner spotted the girls, she smiled.
“Hello Alex, Angel. I just finished speaking with this lovely couple. They said they are very interested in adopting the two of you.”
Alex’s mouth dropped open as the two adults turned around. It couldn’t be…
“Mrs. Kay!” yelled Angel in excitement, dropping her dress and running into the young lady’s outstretched arms.
“Angel! How good it is to see you!” said Mrs. Kay. Alex walked over slowly and watched as Mr. Kay, who she had met a couple times before, bent down and hugged Angel as well. Mrs. Kay stood up and looked at Alex. Alex stood a couple feet away, not sure how to proceed. This was all happening too fast.
“Mrs. Kay?” she began. “Is it true? Do you really want to adopt us?” Alex asked quietly. The owner watched in silence as Mr. Kay stood up, Angel holding onto his arms. Alex still didn’t know how Angel knew Mrs. Kay and her husband, but she didn’t take the time to think about that now.
Mrs. Kay smiled that smile she had only for Alex. “Will you have us?” she asked.
That was all the coaxing she needed. Alex hurried forward and relaxed into Mrs. Kay’s…no, Mom’s embrace, tears finally running down her face. She then turned to Mr. Kay (Dad) and hugged him as well. Then she turned to Angel who looked the happiest she ever had in her life and bent down, hugging her as well.
The owner, quiet until now, and having seen the entire exchange spoke up. “So, what about that paperwork?” she asked, smiling.
The two girls left that day, with what few belongings they had and huge smiles. They said good-bye to the owner, the workers, Kelly the cook, and all the orphans, before piling into the car with Dad at the wheel and Mom in the passenger’s seat.
“You ready?” asked Dad.
“Yes,” both girls answered in unison.
“Alright, then; Here we go!” With that, Dad started the car, and the four of them headed towards their new home…their new life.
Alex looked out the window, overflowing with excitement. She turned her head to the sky. Thank you, God, she prayed, Thank you so much.
