Acts 18:
24 Now a certain Jew named Apollos, born at Alexandria, an eloquent man
and mighty in the Scriptures, came to Ephesus.
25 This man had been instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent
in spirit, he spoke and taught accurately the things of the Lord, though
he knew only the baptism of John.
26 So he began to speak boldly in the synagogue. When Aquila and Priscilla heard
him, they took him aside and explained to him the way of God more accurately.
27 And when he desired to cross to Achaia, the brethren wrote, exhorting the disciples
to receive him; and when he arrived, he greatly helped those who had believed through grace; 28 for he vigorously refuted the Jews publicly, showing from the Scriptures that Jesus is the Christ.
This is one of my favorite passages from the testimony of Acts.
We find a couple from Rome making first contact in Asia Minor
with the highly educated Orator Apollos.
So what is this miracle?
Consider again the way Apollos is described:
“born at Alexandria, an eloquent man and mighty in the Scriptures”.
Alexandria being a world class center for learning.
Imagine any renowned Preacher or Teacher comes to your church,
and afterward an older couple you know approach the speaker and state:
“We sure enjoyed hearing you preach tonight brother. Could we step aside
before you go? We would like to “explain the way of God more accurately”.
I understand this was early and the church was young, but the pride of man
is timeless, and Apollos is described as “having been instructed in the way
of the Lord; and being fervent in spirit, he spoke and taught accurately the
things of the Lord";
It is also pointed out though, that he did need to be updated:
“though he knew only the baptism of John”.
The Holy Spirit insured that this would happen.
Rejoice!
More on Aquila and Priscilla soon.
