I was wondering how the process of entering the ministry works. I believe God has called me to be a pastor or a youth pastor, and I am unsure of how it works.

I know that in my denomination, the UPC accepts candidates who have been training under their pastors. But my pastor went to Bible College.

Also, I don't know when I should go to Bible College, if I even need to. Should I go into it right after high school, or should I go get a degree at a normal liberal arts college? I know some UPC-based Bible Colleges don't require any previous schooling.

Any help here would be appreciated!

I think the best thing to do would be to go to Bible college right after high school and get immersed in all sorts of different theological things. OR you could major in liberal arts and then get an MDiv (master of divinity). Not all denominations require a whole lot of education, as the most important qualification is simply to be a born again Christian. But if you have learned the Bible, learned theology, in my opinion, you make a better pastor. Studying the Bible at church and devotionally is one thing, but going to college for it is another. Your knowledge goes so much deeper. God can use you anyway He chooses to, but I think He wants us to do our best in whatever He's called us to be.

Also VERY important: pray about it. Talk to God and ask Him what His will is. Continue doing devotions and reading the Bible daily, as He reveals Himself through His word. And then pray more.

Good luck and God bless!

My personal take is that bible colleges don't teach people to be "pastors". Rather they exist to better equip "pastors". I suspect that if we are truly called to that type of ministry, it should already be evident before going to bible college. In other words - ensure you are actively involved in the ministries and life of your church before you consider persuing a "career" in ministry.

I've been through bible college, but I was a "pastor" of sorts before I went. Full-time ministry that you're considering is a God-given calling and not a learnt one. The piece of paper you get at the end is really just recognition from men that you've studied. The gifting is a seperate issue.

I don't know you or how it applies to you. I just think it's worth reaffirming that when people consider ministry.

Um...there is far more to being a shepherd for a flock than merely being a Christian (which is obviously a given). A proper understanding of orthodox theology, an understanding of history etc are all necessary to be a pastor - unless you want to lead your people on some sort of wild-eyed theological goose-chase.

Go to college. Get a degree in divinity. Being a knowledgable pastor is far more important than merely "feeling a call" and making a fool out of yourself.

I'm not entirely sure where the UPC stands theologically but I'd talk to current ministers etc and they should be able to direct you - at least somewhat - on your journey.
