The Lord's Day

Perhaps this doesn't belong in this section, but I couldn't think of anywhere else to put it. I attend a Reformed Baptist church where we hold to the Christian Sabbath. How many other Calvinists hold to the keeping of the Lord's Day? I am not disputing it, rather I believe it whole-heartedly. I was just wondering how many "Sabbath keepers" there were.

Some people interpret keeping the Sabbath holy different - what do you not do or what do you do on the Sabbath?

Basically, we try to do only acts of necessity (cooking dinner, washing dishes, etc) and mercy (helping someone on the side of the road) on the Lord's Day. We spend the day fellowshipping with fellow believers. Often, we invite them for supper (or we get invited somewhere) and spend the time between services talking of God. Rather than focus on what we cannot do, we focus on what we can do-honor, enjoy, and glorify our God. If we love God with all of our heart, soul, mind, and strength, then why would we not desire to give him one full day in seven (as he commanded in the 10 Commandments). Why is it that when Christians talk about how we have to obey the 10 Commandments they always leave out the fourth? Did one in ten disappear? For if one is gone, then why cannot the rest go?

Yep!! We do the same over here - although we dont always have fellowship in the afternoon, sometimes we just go home and read or listen to another sermon on a tape or something, then go back out to church in the evening followed by more fellowship!

I agree with you - the Lord's Day is a day of rest and worship. I believe it to be the covenant day. And I also try to observe and celebrate it.

Having said that, I disagree with the idea of having to cease from all worldly employments and recreations. It seems an inadmissable leap to conclude that not being allowed to work means not being allowed to play either...

Hence, I think playing Scrabble is fine.

Confession. On the Sundays that we do not have company, I often take a nap. Our sermons are often 45 min. long. My mind is tired in between services. Usually I have coffee before evening church. The joke-right now, our church is meeting in a Seventh Day Adventist Church (I can't imagine life without coffee or tea, can you?).

Everyone keeps the Lord's Day according to their conscience. I have no problem with reading a Christian novel. Occasionally, if we have company with teenagers who are antsy, then I will play something like checkers or chess with them. Usually, however, I am in fellowshipping with the adults. Another note, my father sometimes has to work on Sundays. He services life-saving medical equipment-it is an act of mercy. So not all work is bad.
