Like tired old soldiers
we sprawl by the fire
dreaming of brighter days
The smoke and spark of faded youth
writhes upward
against diamond-bright stars
Our tarnished armor barely gleams
in the firelight
Ah, but mountain air is a heady brew!
Listen close to our mutterings
and you'll still catch the longing
Some would say
that we built our own fences
only to fillet ourselves against the wire
But I'd sooner place the blame on unseen foes
and powers in high places
If we could bring back the days
when it was only cold steel against warm blood
and the battle lines were drawn....
But now the fire fades from our eyes
Somewhere a lost creature
cries defiantly against the night
and I shiver
We beasts are all the more dangerous
when cornered
we sprawl by the fire
dreaming of brighter days
The smoke and spark of faded youth
writhes upward
against diamond-bright stars
Our tarnished armor barely gleams
in the firelight
Ah, but mountain air is a heady brew!
Listen close to our mutterings
and you'll still catch the longing
Some would say
that we built our own fences
only to fillet ourselves against the wire
But I'd sooner place the blame on unseen foes
and powers in high places
If we could bring back the days
when it was only cold steel against warm blood
and the battle lines were drawn....
But now the fire fades from our eyes
Somewhere a lost creature
cries defiantly against the night
and I shiver
We beasts are all the more dangerous
when cornered
