In about 1992, I learned that the most efficient learning group involved four people of the same sex. Each member agrees to study and discuss a topic at the next meeting and when they meet, they draw roles written on a piece of paper from a pile in the center of the table. The words written on the folded papers are: evaluator, animator, student, and teacher. These are the qualities which are possessed by a good teacher. And so one of the functions of the group is to produce good teachers for going out into the world to teach.
The really exciting discovery, however, is the presence of a fifth person at the invitation of the group, The Holy Spirit. It is the role of the student to pick up on threads that don't seem to fit the topic, but which run through the conversation through different people in the group.
After a time, the Spirit of Truth begins to convict each member of a lie or a distortion of the truth in their personal belief system, and it re-orients them in the right direction. One Scripture tells us that there will be a time when we won't need others to teach us. We will all be taught by God. I believe that this special effect might be a way in which God can do that. At any rate it is an exciting experience to see how He choose the best prepared at each meeting to play each role. And it is even more exciting as we become sensitized to the way He operates in the Group to instruct and teach each individual present. It is mind-blowing to say the least, in the beginning, and then it is truly a marvel that we look forward to experiencing.
