The Last Goodbye

This is something I wrote about a week or more ago. It's still a rough draft because I've been too lazy to edit and polish it. Knowing me, I probably never will. ;) Comments are muchly appreciated.

For days the angry red sky had rained fire down upon the earth, leaving no land untouched by the cleansing flames. Human, beast, and plant alike were cut down without mercy, leaving the land barren and nearly empty. Horrid, nightmarish creatures with twisted, blood encrusted claws and teeth ravaged the land and purged whatever remaining life they could find. They seemed to bend to the will of the blazing storm, sweeping over the globe in unison like a terrible sentient plague.

Clashing head-on with the wave of destruction were embodiments of divinity so horrifyingly beautiful that a mere mortal mind was scarcely able to comprehend their existence. Large, humanoid forms with massive, twisting, scar shrouded wings that spread out, filling the air behind them wielded golden colored steel weapons. Black, demonic blood hissed as it was spilled upon the ground and their dirtied white robes. These beings had been sent to do what no mere man or woman would dare.

Though aware that they could not stop this plague, they held it off while the Saved sought shelter within the gates of the Golden City. This city stretched as far as the eye could see and spreading out from beyond its walls, lush green foliage dotted with colorful flowers crept along the dusty land, untouched by the storm. It was an oasis amongst the chaos, reserved for only those that had made peace with the Master. His followers were always promised a safe place when this time came, and now they remained unscathed within His walls, untouched by the raging storm outside, just like the foliage.

They had spent days, huddled in buildings within the city’s walls, their hearts filled with prayers for those they knew were already Damned. Tears of joy and sorrow flowed freely, mingling with words of praise for their Master. These turbulent times, they knew, would be the last, for eternal bliss awaited the Saved within the Golden City. This is why, upon feeling the sun seep in through the windows of the hallowed grounds, a celebration began, and the streets of the Golden City were filled with His followers.

Not all of the Saved, however, were immediately joyous upon realizing the storm had passed. Many stood at the gates, staring forlorn out the carnage as the Damned began to crawl out from their places of hiding, eyes squinting in the light of the new day. Their clothes, worn, tattered, and soiled hung from thin bodies that shambled along the jagged rocks and lifeless dirt, making their way toward the gates. They pawed helplessly through the bars at those they had known in another lifetime, shouting pleas and curses.

Through all of the commotion a voice, trembling in rage and hatred, rose from the distance, the source unseen. The Damned were compelled by some strange force contained within the age old voice. They responded reluctantly and the crowd of withered bodies began to shuffle away from the paradise and off into the unknown. The saddened throng of His flock watched their brothers and sisters disappear over the horizon, knowing what was in store.

One lost soul, however, resisting the beckoning of hew new Master, clung to the gates as her last stand against him. Her dark, blood encrusted hair hung heavily in front of her pale face as green eyes searched amongst the white robes and saddened expressions. The appearance of the Damned young woman scarcely changed as a familiar face bobbed and weaved through the crowd, making its way nearer to her.

His warm brown eyes met her skeletal form as he approached the gates. Already he could feel his heart being squeezed in the vice of pity and grief for his friend. The last he had saw of her, she had been robust in health with bright eyes and a song in her heart. It seemed now that the luster of her eyes had faded and the song had long since been sung. Warm tears eased down his cheeks as his tanned arms found their way through the bars and around her weary form.

Stains transferred onto his previously unsoiled white robes as she sagged in his embrace silently. And likewise, tears transferred from his cheeks to hers as they pressed close, leaving cleansed skin in their wake. Her eyes however, were dry. In this life she would no longer be afforded the luxury of tears, no matter how desperately she would need them.

Once again, howling from the distance, the voice that embodied hatred and rage trembled through the land, causing the hairs on the back of his neck to stand on end. She jerked mechanically in its direction, her willpower spent. The young man, Saved by his faith, held onto his friend for a moment more, placing a kiss against her filthy brow.

“I’ll miss you.” He sobbed as he felt his embrace release and the girl clamber forward. His head rested upon the perfectly polished golden bars that closed off this paradise from the evils outside. His crystalline tears tumbled from cheerless eyes, shattering into a thousand tiny gems on the soft blades of grass below. Eternal bliss wasn’t going to be the same without her.

awww, it's so sad....

i like the descriptions, they're so vivd and poignant. The contrast between God's safe haven and the outside world is absolutely clear..
May we pray and try harder, so that our loved ones can be with us in eternality too.
