  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The heart?

In Christianity Jesus says things like we have evil thoughts in our hearts. Then proceeds to list a bunch of sin like linking hatred and murder to each other. Or lust and adultery together. Basically every sin. But he calls them thoughts, and we do evil based on what our hearts lust for. Lust meaning whatever desire you are going for at this moment (lust doesn't mean evil/sinful by itself).

So do you believe your heart has thoughts? Or that it's just a muscle for pumping blood?

Technically there is memory cells in our heart, although used mainly for pumping blood I believe? They are similar to brain cells (but I wont say brain cells since they are not in the BRAIN)

Hearts don't have thoughts, they just pump blood.

Reference to the heart, as the seat of the emotions, is a common symbol/metaphor. It doesn't mean the heart literally thinks or feels. It is just a way of speaking.

I guess it is sort of similar if someone says you have guts. It doesn't mean you biologically have a gut. The gut symbolises courage.

All thoughts and feelings are in the brain.

Ditto with the above.

Although I am aware of some who have studied the area of Quantum Physics that are trying to make a case for the heart's condition (state of being affected by emotional or otherwise stimulation) being projected to others.

The heart is just a muscle for pumping blood and it does not have thoughts, however, it does have a connection to the brain (and possibly genitals) via the vagus nerve. This (in my opinion) could be a possible explanation to why some people take this heart metaphor literally. I dont know much about it so here is some more that may explain my point better.

From Exploring the Mind-Body [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse]. Wired. 2007-01-10.

Komisaruk: The nerve pathway for that is via the vagus nerve, which can go directly from the cervix and uterus to the brain, passing outside the spinal cord. Women with spinal cord injuries told us that their doctors told them it was impossible to experience genital sensation, it was impossible to experience genital pleasure. They thought something was wrong with them when they experienced it, and they were troubled by it.
WN: What is the vagus nerve?
Whipple: "Vagus" means wanderer -- the nerve wanders through the body. Previously, it wasn't thought that it goes as far as the pelvic region. But our research and that of other laboratories is showing that it does in fact go to the cervix and uterus and probably the vagina. It carries the impulses from those regions, travels up through the abdomen, goes through the diaphragm, through the thorax (chest cavity), up the neck outside the spinal cord, and into the brain.
