one of the things my company does is facilitate people or family's move from a bad state to a safe state. People often need to just get space between themselves an an ex or a stalker or they just realized when the grid gos down Los Angeles is a death trap.
Often the folks we help are trying to get away from someone and need help with personal security training and of course that covers a lot of things from home selection to what hand gun will work best for them.
One of the things that I stress the most however is trying to be invisible in plain sight or what people in the business call "the grey man". I had a client a few years ago that is a text book example of not being grey or invisible. We moved her from Kalifornia to North Idaho to get away from an abusive ex and his family.
When she arrived we helped her with quite a few things but I told her just give me 15 minutes and I'll tell you all about yourself, just from what I can see.....she agreed and laughed, she wouldn't be laughing to long. Her vehicle told me just what kind of victim she would be.
Her car told me everything I needed to know about her. An expensive German SUV, she has money, next the vote Obama sticker on the back, she's a lefty who probably doesn't own a gun or know how to handle herself. A coexist sticker only confirmed she wouldn't have a gun at home.
The little stick figures showed a mommy and 3 girls....but no male. So I could assume that if I broke in at night I would be confronted by a male. The next sticker had the name of her daughter with the varsity volley ball logo and the name of the school she went to.
10 minutes on face book and I knew what her oldest daughter looked like, what school she went to and who her friends were and in the pics there was no dad so my suspicions were confirmed there was no male in the house. Her middle daughter made honor roll so the name of the school was on the sticker, once again Facebook pics told me what she looked like.
So looking at her from a criminals view point, she's got money, she's unarmed, she has at least one attractive volley ball playing daughter, there's no man in the house, and I knew which schools her daughters went to and their schedules. I could assume that if I were to break into her house at night I would meet little resistance. This woman had made herself the opposite of a grey man (someone who doesn't stand out) she had armed any dirt bag with an average IQ with the knowledge they needed to take advantage of her.
Don't put stickers on your car or truck that give away to much info. Don't advertise who you are to the general public. Try to drive a vehicle that fits in with your surroundings and doesn't stand out.
This female client is now armed, drives a Subaru which I do believe is the official car of Idaho. She has one sticker on the back and that's an NRA member sticker. I had her place a large pair of men's work boots outside her door. Anyone who approached her door was met with a pair of size 14 Mens work boots, a clear message that they should move along.
As a post script she ended up marrying one of my employees so now there's a real pair of combat boots outside her door.
