  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I'm what most people would consider to be a Goth, although I don't refer to myself that way because of the bad name Goths have acquired. To me, the things about me that a lot of people call "gothic" are just me. I love to wear dark colors and dark make-up and dye my hair weird colors because I feel pretty, it's really the only time I like the way I look; I listen to "different" music because it's what reaches me, it's what I can relate to; my "creepy" drawings are cute to me; my poetry and stories may seem "dark" or "evil" or whatever, but writing them makes me happy; and, yes, as a matter of fact, I'm slightly preoccupied with the thought of death, because I want to see the Face of God, and because the two people I love more than anything in this world (my best friend and my fiance) are dying and that's not really something you can forget about, but that doesn't mean I'm going to take my own life. I believe in God and everything I am is His, and I really don't think He cares what color or style clothing I'm wearing when I'm prayng to Him.

I'd like to hear what the rest of the people here think of "Goths," however you define them. I know where I stand on the issue, but it's always important to know what other people think....

Hmm..

I don't like to group people together like that. Goth, Prep, Jock, Geek. All these are just names for things people like. Dark music? Thats cool. Obsessed with death? As am I. If I told someone just those 2 things, they would think I'm a 'goth'. But when I meet someone face to face, they would probably think 'slacker/prep', just by how I look. When what I'd really LIKE people to think when they meet/see me is "Matt".

I look forward to death. I like to feel things, both good and bad. I like to use those senses god gave me. So naturally, I look forward to feeling what death is like. I want to know what its like to feel my soul leave my body. ~shrug~

Honestly, after reading what you like, I'd say you're just.. you. I love doing alot of the same things. I had blue hair with green highlights at one time. ^.^

BUT!! At the same time, as a christian, I also live according to what the bible says. Mainly, Love got with all your being, and love your neighbor like you love yourself. But I also like the 'don't put a stumbling block infront of your brothers'. If what I do somehow causes someone to stumble in their walk with God, then I feel as though I have sinned and will be held accountable for that. ~shrug~

I like goths.
But then again, I dont think many modern goths are goth. But that's just my opinion, one formed by being a part of the "goth resurgence" in the late '80's and early '90's.

I classify "goths" into several groups.

Group 1 Your heavy duty hard core goths, the ones that have metal spikes surgically imbedded in thier head and use store bought bleach to add that special white tint to thier skin. These are almost fanatically anti-conformist and hate the world with a passion. This is usually what people think of when they hear "Goth"

Group 2 This group is Goth for the attention they get because of it. The "shock value". They wear extravagant clothes and listen to gothic music, but dont really accept that the world is ridiculous, which is the core of the Gothic sub-culture. They enjoy the stares and whispers that others cast thier direction and usually shed the gothic look once they get home.

Group 3 This group isnt always Goth, but they have many characteristics of being Gothic. They dress in dark clothes, wear dark makeup, have an interest in death or such things. They enjoy the look for what it is, they dont dress that way for attention nor do they adopt the hardcore non-conformity message of Group 1. Thier tastes happen to run somewhat paralel to Gothic so they are lumped together with other Goths. Even though they themselves may actually be very bright, cheery people.

Group 4 The last group of people that are termed Goth are those that are interested in the look only. They dont express non-conformist views through thier dress, but rather they like the way of the Gothic look. You may see them in blue jeans and a t-shirt one day, and black lipstick and a coat the next.

Even going back to more along the lines of Lord Byron, Mary Shelley, etc. would be a step up.
Or perhaps even...

While I'm not a Goth and never have been one, I know a few Goths and former Goths. My fiancee is a former Goth.

The Goths strike me as a Romantic movement. I think it is healthier than simply conforming and blending in with the mainstream.

Personally, I'm a Visigoth! Hehe.

Like Matt Never Existed, I don't like to put people into groups. I simply believe that everyone has their own "style" of personality, but like styles of fashion, everyone's is being labled and squashed by hollywood. If what you do, how you live, and how you dress makes you feel happy and good about yourself, so be it.

It's really not at all important what other people think. There's your first mistake right there.

Who cares what other people think about you or your style?

If you are happy with yourself, then more power to ya.

I second that completely. If you are happy with yourself and confident, it doesn't matter what you wear. It's a personal choice and only that. Besides, if everyone dressed the same and acted the same and thought the same things, it would get mighty boring :)

As long as they don't embarrass the fairy, goths are fine. :)

Non conformist scenes are interesting including the conformist attitude inside the non conformist groups. It's very distopiac, and I enjoy studies of distopias.
I would agree with the others, who cares what others think (hmm, contradicting).

Are you referring to the "I wear leather and spikes and a purple mohawk and am an INDIVIDUAL, a true iconoclast.....just like all my friends!!" attitude?

I think the fact that the store Hot Topic exists at all is pretty much proof that conformity in noncoformity is not an uncommon phenomenon.

True, that's a possible danger. "Non-conformists" can be some of the most conformist people of all, instead within their own little subgroup.
