  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I think much of what St. Paul expresses in Romans 2 about following the natural law to know right from wrong is where God will know every person's heart and have mercy as He determines (Romans 9:11-16 I think also corresponds to this). Christians cannot endorse other belief systems but for us to judge our neighbor and presume we know where God determines who He will have mercy on is delusion. Our Lord's Beatitudes seem to clearly indicate those He calls "blessed" & only the final one is exclusively Christian. Truly the Lord Jesus Christ gives stern warnings like in John 16:1-15 for ex. which is all the more reason to I guess where to strive to abide in love, faith, & hope (1st Corinthians 13:13 etc.) & have sober fear of the Lord also.

I have a new post on my blog at What Jesus did Do: The Good Samaritan: A Reinterpretation where I reinterpret the parable of the good samaritan for modern times. If you do not know who I am, I am a straight pastor advocating for tolerance and compassion within the Christian community, as opposed to judgment and condemnation like we usually get. You can also find my blog at What Jesus did Do
Rather than rewriting the parable yourself, get your 'audience' to re-write it. (Having spent several hours this week marking students' attempts to rework parables into the modern context).

That would be a very interesting experiment. I think it would tell us one of two things: either they really do understand the parable and just struggle putting it into practice, or they do not understand the parable at all. It would certainly be interesting to see the result.

I also think it is a delusion for us to presume who God will have vengeance on. Humans naturally tend to be more judgmental which I think is a sign of our sin nature. The God nature that we have in the Holy Spirit calls us to be more compassionate and forgiving.
