  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The geek and nerd thread. Period.

This is the thread where its OK to be your true self and not just put on a façade for the single people here. Just admit it. You are a nerd. You may one day be richer than all your friends. Your future kids already have all of their future toys, because you have more transformers than 80% of the world's population. People may win debates with you in the politics section of this forum, but that's OK because you have more Legos than they do anyway. If they knew how much information you know about every actor in every storm trooper suit in all six of the Star Wars movies, they would go home in disgrace. This is where you show off your guns- the collections that blow the competition away. The trivia that no one else cares about but you know it and you own it.

I'll start. I have been collecting rocks since I was a kid in Missouri. If they sparkled, then I re-possessed them from the driveway. If a used car lot had limestone gravel instead of concrete, I was there. If there was a rock shop in the mall, I had the layout memorized. There are many skill sets necessary to learn about basic geology and start a rock collection. But the most important skill set is theft. And 9 times out of 10, no one cares. Now, most of the brighter colored rocks came from rock shops, but some also came from driveways. This is not the biggest rock collection in the world by any means, but I still like it. Its actually about half of my collection, but there was no room for the rest of it in these tackle boxes:

Now its time to show off your guns. I bet there are plenty of people out there who can do better. This is your time to show the single people out there that you are proud of who you are, even if you are in their friend zone.

I'm not big on collecting things, but thanks to the library, I am a big fan of Batman comics. I saw DKR like six times in theaters, own the whole trilogy on bluray, and even have a Teen Titans fan fiction posted on fanfiction.net.... I and a few friends run a blog for all things nerd culture; including cosplay and interviews with cosplayers.....

Dorks are accepted as part of society in this thread. And Batman was so much better than Superman.

Before I got rid of my collection, I had over 10,000 Pokemon cards. All meticulously organized.

My proudest part of the collection was a special Japanese starter box, which were the first card ever released. I had six of them.

I never got into Pokémon, but so many other people did. The Japanese product designers must know a lot about marketing. I was and still am obsessed with Transformers.

I have a feed dedicated to nothing but photos of road signs.

I think we all belong here.

I had a friend in college that collected license plates from different states. One of my current friends is working on photographing every county sign in Kentucky. Every time he drives through a new county he takes a picture of the sign. A professor in college once told me that bourbon got its name from Bourbon county, KY. I don't know if that is true but its interesting.

Nice collection. I'll have to get some up of my fossils. Are you a fan of those as well?

I wasn't as much of a fan as a kid so many of my fossils were demoted to the fish tank. Then as an adult, I regret that decision very much. I think I had one with the imprint of a trilobite or some kind of small sea creature in it. From what I understand of fossils, the imprint of a creature is not technically a fossil, but the preserved skeleton is?

Not actually sure on that one, but quite possibly.

I've never found one like that myself, only ever seen them. Given the contrasted colours, it's very possible that it's the skeleton but also maybe the rock was split and separated from the fossil leaving the imprint.

I've found some rocks with pearlescent colouring where an ammonite was, pretty cool.

That is a nice rock collection.. it makes me wish I would've kept up with some of the stuff I collected when I was a kid (rocks, coins, and stamps). Even though my rock collection was pretty small (I had like 5-10 rocks :D).

I guess the nerdiest thing I'm into now is home audio equipment. I built a surround sound system for my living room (crossover plans were provided online). And there's a lot of physics, electronics, and mechanical vibration problems which can be related to speaker construction/design. So I get a little nerdy and bring it up when talking about other things, which some people think is cool (fellow nerds) :D , but others probably not so much.

Most electricity is over my head. Powerlines are no exception.

For all the marbles, here it goes- my facets of Nerdom.

LOTR- I am obsessed with LOTR. Pippin Took was my first crush (I had a picture of him hidden in my closet). Nobody will play LOTR Trivial Pursuit with me because I don't get the questions wrong. I have 3 Arwen dresses. I cried when ROTK won 11 Oscars. I refer to all cast members by their first names and sometimes nicknames (such as Dom or Daisy). I have watched all of the commentaries and special features from all the extended DVDs and quote them in conversations. I have read the Silmarillion multiple times.

LOST- I am obsessed with LOST. Anybody I know who watches/has watched LOST calls me with their questions- I answer them and can cite Episode titles with my answers. In the cases I cannot answer a question, I consult my LOST encyclopedia (seriously). I watch the Pilot every "anniversary" and created and wore a Dharma dress for the 10 year anniversary this year.

Batman- I've always been a Batman fan. I never read the comics, but I watched the old live action show and cartoon network cartoon. I went to Dark Knight and Dark Knight Rises' premieres in costume (Batgirl then Catwoman). I had a duel with a friend in college to decide who was better between Batman and Spiderman in which I wore my Batgirl suit and she a Spiderman suit and we played in all these competitions my other friends set up.

Other nerdiness- The people in my dorm called me "Peach" (as in Princess Peach) and I have multiple Princess Peach costumes. I wear a Spyro kigurumi around the house. I can recite some Shakespeare sonnets. Last, but not least, I took the time to compile this list.

I'm sure there's more but that's all I could think of for the moment ;)

OH! LOTR! How could I forget that? I once made a LOTR cast list, if it had been made in the eighties.

And LOST. I do love LOST. Seen it many times.

You should check you library catalog for Batman: The Long Halloween by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale. It was a big inspiration to Batman Begins and Dark Knight.

I'm into this hifi stuff as well!!

I have two diy amps and I'm currently using an lm3886 based 45W amp. I would be having a Yamaha AS 500 shortly.

Also, I'm into electronics news and developments..I have around 20 or so feeds about that subject in my feed reader.

Aaand I love LOTR.

I really like MLP (hence the av). I don't really collect anything though, although I suppose I collect a lot of MLP fan music which I listen to quite a bit more than other music. I watch the show whenever new episodes come out and keep somewhat in touch with the community.

Also, I really like languages and know a fair share about what goes on. I even do conlanging, which is creating your own language (we call them constructed languages, or conlangs).

Well, Ive been collecting various things since I was very young. Sci-fi, coins, paper money, etc. Later, I got into collecting weapons, books, etc.

As far as the nerdy/geeky side. Well, I have what my family calls my workshop. Im not going to say what I call it. LOL But, basically, I work on anything mechanical or electrical. Ive also been messing around with alternative forms of power generation, trying to repurpose old technologies.

Like steam engine or watermill?

If your drawings about them are not secret, it would be interesting to see some of your designs.
