  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Wasn't the Florida footbridge supposed to save lives?

But unfortunately a tragedy occurred and it took lives.

My question is: Why aren't they building another one?

You know ... to save lives?

Or don't they care anymore?

Apparently it was still under construction. According to an article titled >

"Feds release report on investigation of FIU pedestrian bridge collapse" >

there were calculation errors, and not responding as needed to cracking that had started.

I imagine there is the financial part of how much it would cost to build a new one. And right now they possibly are still paying for the consequences of that collapse, in which case they could not have money free to start another project. And they need to deal with getting someone who knows what they are doing, for doing one that will not break down, again.

I think there are places where there are foot bridges and they have not broken down. But it looks as though that one was a long reach from one side to the other; so it could have been more difficult to build, than other ones were; I don't know.

If it was supposed to reach the whole way across without any stands in the middle . . . they might be thinking "twice" about trying that, again. And so there could be the issue of if they want to go with supports in the middle of the bridge . . . supports that could interfere with the views of drivers down below.

I'll bet it has to do with money available. It cost a lot to clean that up, plus there are lawsuits. So, that could tie up money.

But, then, another corporation could step in, financially clear. I don't know, though.

It could be their political credibility has taken a hit. Ones are not interested in gambling that happening again, I suppose.

Interesting points.

But it didn't stop NASA after: Apollo 1, the Challenger, and the Columbia incidents.

In which case, why would ones not let failure stop their space program, but maybe ones did let failure stop the rebuilding of the bridge?

Also . . . the Trade Center has not been rebuilt.

So, I guess there are times when a failure ends something, but other times they keep right on with what they are doing.

In the case of the space program, I see how they have things they feel they have to do; and so they keep trying and paying.

In the case of the bridge, if the structure fails, still people can walk where they want to go, or drive. But if a space shuttle blows up . . . walking is not an option! :)

Keep in mind though, that one of the selling points of the FIU was that it was supposed to "save lives."

NB: No scientists were involved in designing and building that footbridge. ;)

I just read it.

It looks like they tasted the bridge, right while not stopping the traffic from going under it!

And it had concrete, not steel. Not to mention . . . it seems they put the whole thing together, nearby, and then they were going to transfer that one piece into position.

Another thing > the picture seems to mean they will have heavy-duty cables reaching from one side of the street, to support it from above. That could, I suppose, help keep the thing from dropping > even if something started to give way, still there could be cables from above, as back-up . . . or pull-up?

There seems to be emphasis on how steel is the right way to go.

But I am concerned about there being bidding. That seems like it could bring down the funds needed by the contractor to do it right and safely.
