  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The concept of Boundaries, at least as preached by Henry Cloud, is a false doctrine.

The Trustworthy Word: A Response to Dr. Henry Cloud's Sermon at Gateway Church (July 9)
Yeah, the whole "boundaries" thing does sound deeply psychological, and secular, framed in a Christian way. The Way of the Cross urges us to reject sin and occasions to sin. We may say "no" to people if our saying "yes" would be contrary to God's Will, or cause sin or an occasion to sin, or be impossible for us.

Not only is it secular, it's plagiarized from a secular source. While I do not know the specific origin of the teaching of boundaries, it was well-known in mental health institutions throughout the 80's; Anne Katherine, M.A. wrote a book called "Boundaries, Where You End and I Begin," a secular mental health resource devoid of any biblical reference; written in 1991. Now, that isn't a knock on Anne Katherine, she makes no claims of biblical reference; and I can appreciate her psychiatric attempts at healing, apart from heretical claims; and maintaining that we rightly separate theology and psychology. Henry Cloud's book is published in 1992, and is word for word the exact same, except adding out-of-context bible verses.

If you watch his Youtube videos, you will hear a total of 3 bible verses, all covering his entire theology.

I watched the first couple of minutes of his video, and it seems to me that he is preaching self-improvement, which is New Age philosophy. He seems to be using Bible verses to hang that hat on.

I went away from this post and then I got two Scriptures come to mind:
Paul told the Corinthians, "I did not come preaching the enticing words of man's wisdom but in demonstration of the Spirit and in power". He also said, "I determined not to know anything among you save Christ and Him crucified."

I also thought of a quote by Charles Spurgeon,
"I'm just a poor sinner and nothing at all,
but Jesus Christ is my all in all".

What we are getting in much conference speaking are messages soaked in the enticing words of man's wisdom, concentrating on self improvement of some kind, whether spiritually, or in prosperity, or being just better people so that God will like us and bless us more than He is doing right now.

When I compare this type of teaching, and the sound Bible teaching of Derek Prince and Leonard Ravenhill, I see that there are vast differences. With the modern self-improvement type of conference teaching, there are no real conversions to Christ, no healing, no faith building Bible teaching. All the people go away with is a set of ideas of how they could be happier, actuated, stress-free, prosperous, successful people in the world and maybe in the church where they fellowship.

I sat and viewed many hours of Derek Prince's Bible teaching, but I got tired of listening to more than just a couple of minutes of Mr Cloud's teaching. That's the difference between feeding my spirit, and just my mind and soul.

Necessary Endings.

Ah yes. Notice also how his second point is that God is separate from us. He does this so he can set up that God does not heal us but that we need other wise counsel, namely, counseling, namely from him, for a price.

This is extremely heretical. God was only separate in OT times.. the very name Jesus means Emmanuel, or God WITH us." The whole point of God sending Jesus was RECONCILIATION with God, by sending Jesus who died on the cross and rose again to take away our sins, and by this we now have access to the Father. Cloud teaches that we are separate ourselves from God to have freedom. Its very wrong. Our freedom is IN CHRIST not apart from Christ.
