The Mason thread got me to thinking. What about the Elks? I was thinking about joining the local Elk chapter here. It's like $114/year in membership. The reason I want to join is because of the pools. I can take the kiddos there whenever. They have put-put golf, too for the kids and their dinners are cheap ($12.00 Prime Rib on the weekends). I checked into it and found out there's some secret initiation. Anyone know anything about this or care to shed some light? Thanks...

The major problem with the Elks is that the OCA and other Orthodox Churches had to use their bylaws in order to be incorporated ... and this introduced the parish councils which the Catholic Church has also introduced.

A lot of priests really dislike the Parish Councils which they feel to be foreign to the idea of a church. Some parish councils within Orthodoxy have actually petitioned the Bishop to remove a good priest when he starts preaching against popular sins that the members would rather not hear. Does this happen within the Catholic Parish Councils? I have heard that the Eastern Catholics do have a problem here.

No, I don't know one thing about it....but that reminds me of the Flinstones.
Remember that club that Fred and Barney were in and they wore the big elk horns on their head? ^_^

I don't know anything about the Elks in particular, but secret initiations aren't necessarily forbidden - it's the content which matters.

The only such group I've ever heard Catholics being forbidden to join is the Masons. The Elks are probably okay, and if something anti-Catholic did come up, you can always quit.

And Fred and Barney were members of the Loyal Order of the Water Buffalo.

According to the research Cardinal Law did on Freemasonry, he specifically names the Elks as an alternative which catholics can join:

The opportunities for making business contacts and enjoying fellowship in other organizations are so plentiful that no Catholic need feel he is sacrificing much by following the precepts of his church in shunning the lodge. He can join the Kiwanis, Lions, Elks, Eagles, Chamber of Commerce, Jaycees, Moose, Knights of Columbus, American Legion, VFW, Serra Club, Optimists, Exchange, Rotary and dozens of other civic and service organizations.
