• CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
 • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

The elect are those for whom Jesus died.

Since Jesus died for the sins of the whole world we could in one sense say that everyone is God's elect.

But since people can refuse God's salvation, much like a person can give "do not resusitate" orders to medical practitioners, it is probably better to speak of God's elect at those who do not resist God's grace that is freely offered.

Rejection of those truths is why both Arminians and Calvanists miss the mark.

To be one of God's elect means God has chosen the person or group for a purpose. Typically, in these discussions, the presupposition is we are talking about God's individual choice of believers unto salvation. So God choosing someone to be an Apostle, or setting someone apart to betray Jesus does not mean the same thing. But lets just stick with election unto salvation.

Good Day, Luke

The elect are these:

God chooses us, not because we believe, but that we may believe
- Augustine (354-430)

The following is from Spurgeon's sermon, #817

None of us have any right to God's mercy.

Election is an indisputable truth of Christianity,
and one full of the richest comfort to the child
of God- one which is intended to kindle in him
perpetual flames of adoring gratitude. It is a
truth which lays him low, and makes him feel
that there is nothing in him, and then raises
him up and bids him, like a seraph, adore
before the throne!

Distinguishing grace is a fact; prize this
truth and hold it firmly. Thank God that
you are made a partaker of his eternal love.

The sovereign electing grace of God

chooses us to repentance, to faith, and
afterwards to holiness of living, to Christian
service, to zeal, and to devotion.

Election should be to you savory meat such as
Isaac's soul loved; and as you feed upon it you
will become like the three holy children in Babylon,
both fatter and fairer and more lovely than those
who have not received this precious truth.

Peace to u,

Yes, it is God who chooses or elects, the word means the same thing, a choice, and according to my definition, when this choice is to have mercy upon the individual, to place him or her "in Christ" this is election unto salvation. So those in the body of Christ are the elect. They are individually elected when they are placed in Christ.

The requirement to "prove" something suggests I have to convince those that would never be allowed on a jury, folks with their minds made up with an alternate solution. I can demonstrate from scripture evidence that election unto salvation occurs when we are set apart, when we are spiritually baptized into Christ. For example, James 2:5 demonstrates that God chooses folks for salvation while they are alive, during their lifetime, based on the condition of their heart. But if I asked you if you accepted this evidence, I suspect you would say no. All I can say is when I was studying scripture to defend Calvinism, rather than finding in scripture evidence for Calvinism, I found it is based on what scripture does not say, it is an argument from silence. But, I like to think, my view is an argument from explicit statements and implicit contextual meanings.

And yes, I am keenly aware of the problem in the above, if it is so obvious that an average guy like me can see it, why is it that for 400 years thousands of reformed scholars have not also turned away from the doctrine. I have no answer for that one.

There are three elections that the Bible speaks of. (4 if you include angels)

“Behold! My Servant whom I uphold, My Elect One in whom My soul delights! Is.42:1

This is a reference to Jesus Christ.

For Jacob My servant’s sake, And Israel My elect, Is.45:4a

A reference to the nation of Israel.

Therefore I endure all things for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory. 2Tim.2:10

A reference to the Church age believer.

The nation of Israel could never be the elect of God; for that entity has always contained unbelievers.

Just read further in that chapter; to see without doubt; that 'the nation of Israel' cannot be the context.

Isaiah 45:25 "In the LORD shall all the seed of Israel be justified, and shall glory."

Either this is talking about Christ (the seed) and His followers by faith; or it is as you say, talking about 'the nation of Israel'...but in this context then, Judas Iscariot, Caiphus, Herod, Ahab, Roaboam, and all of the wicked and evil members of 'the nation of Israel' down through the ages are justified.

Nope, that can't be; therefore the context of Isaiah 45's Israel cannot be 'the nation of Israel'...and that be anything that contains unbelievers and rejectant, disobedient sinners.
