  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I was at the store yesterday and one line had a woman in it and the other line had 2 guys in it. I was next to an old guy who was also choosing a line. I went with the 2 guys and he went behind the woman. The two guys were buying flowers and I asked if he did something wrong or if he was being nice. He said its complicated. I said I understand. Then I told him how I bough flowers just to be nice once and she asked what I did wrong. They laughed and left. Then as the cashier was ringing me up I noticed the old guy had moved behind me and I looked back and saw the woman still being rang up and I told him men always get rang up faster so I always choose to be in their line. I said, right? to the cashier to which she answered, with a wry smile, no comment.

Society is full of talk of fairness and gender equality, but at its basic level there are simple differences between the sexes.

Hmm, I generally take the same amount of time if not longer in the checkout line. Many times I am using three types of payment and sometimes four types of payment when my mother-in-law is with me. The are those rare times when I am using five types of payment, all for the same groceries.

Lets see, there is our WIC card, or food stamp card, our or my wife's check card, then when my mother-in-law is with me she usually will put some of the total on her check card and then her food stamp card. Usually, my mother-in-law will use her stuff first and then I will use our stuff to finish it off. The days when the is five is when I either use my or check card, our being my wife and I, or my check card.

So yeah, I'm not sure that what your saying can be an across the board generalization when it comes to buying groceries and a difference between men and women.

I always choose the female checkers (if there is a choice). They seem to know what they're doing better than the male checkers. I'll also choose a female bagger (if there is a bagger, some stores don't have them), because the male baggers tend to throw everything together (maybe it's faster?) instead of keeping items sorted and placed with care.

Well - grocery shopping goes quicker for me than it does for my wife - but then again she's far more involved in the process than I am. She clips coupons, figures out how to arrange purchases, pays attention to the amounts being rung up at the cashier, etc...all in the effort to try and save money.

I, on the other hand, have a mental checklist of 5 things or so that I want to get, I go directly to them, take them directly to the cashier, only say the obligatory pleasantries , have my card ready to swipe, and then get the heck out of Dodge... So yeah, I'd say my shopping trips go quite faster than my wife's. lol

Going to the mall, etc...yeah...same thing. For my wife it's an event - to peruse over various items, see what's on sale, etc. If I'm there to buy a pair of jeans, I walk in a straight line right over to the jeans, grab my size, don't even try them on, go to the cashier, pay, and leave.

That's shopping as a guy. :)

Actually Ezoo, I shop for clothes like you. I don't want to browse. If I like it and it's in my size, it's mine. End of. My husband is the opposite. He'll spend hours browsing socks. We never go shopping for clothes together - I don't have the patience.

My wife is very similar. We have a grocery list. I usually don't deviate from "the list", unless there's a smokin' deal on something I can't pass up.

When I go grocery shopping by myself, I'm in and out in 5 mins or so. When I say "be right back" when I leave, I usually am.

When my wife goes grocery shopping for similar items, the "be right back" is typically 20-30 mins longer, not including the trips to a different grocery store because they have something on sale there.

When we shop together, my wife will say "Well, let's go look at ______ ", to which I will respond "but that's not on the list". I lose every time.

:D

My husband and I have similar shopping styles. Grocery shopping, we tend to usually buy the same things every time, so it's a routine.

Early in our marriage, I needed a new coat for the upcoming winter. We both thought, that kind of thing usually takes comparison shopping for the right one at the right price, so we blocked off an afternoon to allow trying on several coats at maybe more than one store. Therefore, when the first coat I tried on was a good price and a good fit, and it met my needs, and our errand was over in minutes, it surprised both of us.

We actually didn't know what to do with our time for the rest of the afternoon.

It occurs to me that some women do think in terms of, "Yeah, this coat's fine, but what else is out there? Let's weigh all the options first before making a final decision." I'm not one of those women. If the first coat works, why keep on about it?

A decisive woman who knows what she wants when she sees it.

Add that to the what men like about women thread! :)

How exactly does the OP's scenario show the differences in men and women?

My husband takes twice as long to shop as I do. Analyze that, lol.
I think somebody was generalizing.

Also confusing "equal" with "identical."

Common mistake. Just because two entities are equal doesn't mean they have no differences. Just because two entities are different doesn't mean one is automatically superior to the other. What's "better," an apple or an orange? Neither one. They're just different, not unequal.

He's not the only one. The older I get, the less of these generalizations make any sense to me. They are simply not what I see or hear IRL.

Maybe as you women gain in maturity, you become more like men? ;)

Hey, hey, hey now! I'm still pretty young here! I'm one of the youngest in this area :)

And I've always been this way. I hate wasting my afternoon in a store. Get in, get out.

I guess if I were skinny and rich, I might enjoy shopping more.
