The Delitzsch Hebrew Gospels

This is a newly released edition that I am considering. It is produced by FFOZ, Vine of David. It looks to be the most traditional edition I've seen. I would be interested in the comments of Contra and Yonah. I don't imagine you have heard of this yet, but I would be interested in your review. And anyone else that can make a constructive critique of it.

In 1873 the British and Foreign Bible Society commissioned Franz Delitzsch to prepare a translation of the New Testament into Hebrew. Delitzsch agreed and set to work utilizing his extensive knowledge of mishnaic Hebrew and first century Judaism to create a translation and reconstruction of the Greek text back into an original Hebrew voice. His reconstructing translation was completed in 1877. After the first edition, it went through extensive review and revision for the next 13 years. The final edition was published in 1890 under the care and supervision of Gustav Dalman. Sixty thousand copies were distributed for free throughout Europe resulting in tens of thousands of Jewish people coming to know Yeshua as the Messiah of Israel. Those Jewish believers and their influences are the very embers that have ignited this modern day hope and revival.


Since that time the Delitzsch NT has continued its good work through a series of reprints by various missions to the Jews. It is our honor to work alongside this great man of God and bring all of his wisdom, scholarship and vision to today’s people of God in a fresh and relevant way. We pray that it will allow even more Jewish people to engage in the life giving words of Yeshua.

Thank you for your reply! I have seen those videos. From what I can see, I like the work they have done and the work Franz did in the 1800's. If what I saw and read where correct this edition would far out weigh David Stern's work of the CJB. And would be the bible of choice for someone who was brought up Jewish and understanding Hebrew. It's laid out like the traditional prayer books and uses only Hebrew and English. No transliterations.

I was wondering what others here thought about it.

For a long time I used the Delitzsch translation when I referred to the NT in Hebrew. It's online, in fact, for free. I don't see why they are releasing only the gospels and not the whole NT. Is it being released with a translation into English? Is the purpose to have a copy in Hebrew or to use the Hebrew text as an authoritative base for a new English translation (which seems odd to me)?

Considering the work Franz Delitzsch did, and how well it is still respected and used today, I had considered getting the copy FFOZ is producing through Vine of David. My reasoning is that I am on the computer more than I should be anyhow, and reading for long periods of time on a computer screen is far more difficult on my eyes than reading a book.

From what I understand of his work here in Germany, and the references I've heard made on BibelTV (Not on the recent English Translation), It would be worth having. IMHO, comparing it to the CJB would be like comparing Cliff's Notes to a great literary work.

IIRC, the reasoning for releasing only the Gospels was due to all the work that it took to get this far with only them, and hopefully to finance translating over all his work on the rest of the NT? ::scratching head::

Like I said, I've enjoyed Delitzsch's translation. I used to have a hard copy. Now the hard copy that I have is from the Bible Societies, and I think it's even better than his work. It is clear, concise and accurate in every instance that I've read so far.

Have you thought about getting an ebook reader? - they are much better for you than a computer screen, you can download loads of books and articles off the net. Im a techno phob but its growing on even me

I had, but I really just love the feel and smell of paper I guess. I am a speed reader and any reading on any screen bothers my eyes. I think it's the strobe effect of the back light. I find that the newly mandated lightbulbs cause issue as well. :/
