Name: Kemptaar
Age: Indeterminate. Has been ruling since most people can remember.
Height: 5'11"
Weight: 146 lbs.
Eye color: Black as the emptiness of the Void
Hair color: Whitish hair
Hair style: Neck length, and his bangs fall around eye length
Body type: Relatively thin, but not emaciapated. Has a wiry frame, with corded muscles, though they aren't apparent.

Personality: Kemptaar is a cold, calculating individual. Quiet to the extreme, he rarely says anything, and never says anything that doesn't need to be said. As such, he rarely engages in banter with any enemy.

Kemptaar's stare is something that makes even the bravest of dragons cower in fear. His eyes, shadowed under his brow, never seem to blink. Most of his servants keep their heads bowed in his presence not so much of because they were ordered to, but more so that they would not have to meet his gaze. Only a few people have dared looking him face-to-face, but they are far and few between.

Kemptaar rarely ever smiles, for very few things amuse him. One of the few things he does delight in is cruelty and the suffering of others. He disdains physical torture of victims for the simple fact that he believes that physical torture plays a small part in true suffering. He prefers to, instead, rip apart a person's soul.

History: Despite popular belief, Kemptaar was not always the cruel ruler of the majority of Perrelin. Kemptaar, in times long gone, used to be a mage with power above the ordinary. In those days, he was a good-natured individual, always helping those in need. He was also enormously curious about the nature of the universe, believing that with that knowledge, he could better the world even more. And so conducted a number of experiments to this end. One day, one of his experiments went awry. The details were never truly known, but there were many rumors as to what happened. Some say he had found a fundamental secret of the universe, and went insane from the knowledge. Others say that he opened a gate to the Void, and a being of that netherworld consumed him, taking on his form. Whatever the case, no one knows for sure.

The truth of what happened on the day of the experiment is known only to Kemptaar, no matter how many rumors may hint at what happened. What did happen that day was that Kemptaar, the mage, was preparing an expedition into a largely unexplored plane of existence called the Void. The components of the ritual involved Kemptaar to leave his body behind, as the journey was entirely a spiritual one. Unfortunately, Kemptaar was nowhere nearly prepared for the horrors he saw in the Void. His mind was shattered, and the link between him and his body was broken. Numerous horrendous beings fought each other for possession of the broken man’s body. Finally, one emerged victorious, and so the creature of nightmares entered the real world, disguised as he was. He was able to devour the shattered fragments of the man’s broken mind, consuming all his knowledge of the arts arcane. As a creature of the Void, he also retained the power to draw upon the emptiness of the Void and shape it to his will. With the combination of these two powers, and a innate lust for power and a wicked desire to inflict pain upon the inhabitants of the world he had just entered.

As soon as the creature gained control of Kemptaar’s body, he began his reign of terror. Using the magicks and the connection to the Void, he was able to forge a one-creature army. His path of pain made a beeline for the king’s palace, with occasional stops for “feeding.” He plowed through the royal guard of the king’s castle like a knife through butter, casually tossing them aside like leaves in a storm. As Kemptaar had slain every person in his path that might know of his intent, there was no one to warn the king. Kemptaar burst into the throne room quite unexpectedly, tossing aside the elite portion of the royal guard, his stare fixating the king in place. Kemptaar walked quite calmly up the few steps to the throne, procuring a dagger no one had ever seen the like of before, and stabbed the king. The king, impaled on the dagger, seemingly grew older and older before the eyes of everyone else in the room. Finally, only a desiccated corpse remained. Kemptaar casually tossed the body to the side, shattering the bones on one of the marble pillars in the room. Proclaiming his ascension to the audience in the room, he promptly slaughtered everybody in the room except for a young page, whom he ordered to spread the news.

Since that fateful day, he forced his armies to begin marching on the rest of Perrelin, conquering much of the known world. Of course, that was many years beyond most people's times. Any person who might have some inkling as to what Kemptaar really was, or how he became that way, was swiftly slaughtered or has been forced into hiding for fear of such a fate. He has not aged one bit since the day in which he took over the mage’s body, allowing him to continue his reign of terror indefinitely.

Though he rarely wears the crown these days, it is widely accepted that he is the world's singular sovereign ruler. He rarely goes out into the towns of his empire, usually only doing so to make an example out of someone. He has set up an extensive spy network, however, and this works as his secret police.

Abilities:

Even before his transformation, Kemptaar was an extremely powerful mage. After his change, he seemed to grow exponentially in power. His arcane knowledge is rivaled by no one in his kingdom, and he seems to have gained dark, otherworldly powers as well. Any who have seen the full extent of his power have either not lived to tell the tale, or have been driven insane by the sheer horror of it. The only people who seen his powers at work and have not had these fates inflicted upon them are his closest advisors, though it is widely believed that even they have not seen what the Dark King can truly do. There were rumors from the battlefront years ago of massive otherworldly storms appearing from nowhere and obliterating entire armies in minutes. Whether these events were truly caused by Kemptaar or were instead caused by some other outside force, no one knows. All that matters, though, is that the act has been attributed to Kemptaar, and he has not denied the claim (though he actually confirmed it either), making him all the more feared.

It is rumored that Kemptaar feeds only on the negative emotions people feel, such as pain, fear, rage, and sorrow. The fact that he has never been seen to eat conventional food only serves to support this theory.

The only physical weapon Kemptaar uses is an ornate sacrificial dagger with a magically shaped and strengthened obsidian blade. It is rumored to have dangerous powers itself, most notably the power to create the illusion in the victim's mind that their worst fear has come true. This illusion is almost always indiscernible from reality; the emotions evoked only serve to strengthen the Dark King. This blade is actually just an extension of the Void from Kemptaar's conciousness.

Other than his specialty with his dagger, Kemptaar shows no affinity for any other weapon. Despite his thin frame, the Dark King seems preternaturally strong when the mood strikes him, to the extent where wrestling dragons is no problem for him. It is rumored that whatever spirit now possesses him is the cause of this, but whatever the case, Kemptaar still prefers to use guile and pain to bring down any enemies who might stand against him.

The Úlairigûl:

The Úlairigûl are twisted creations of the King's. They start as an average person, subjected to Kemptaar's tortures. Usually, one is formed when Kemptaar tortures a person to death with his dagger, and then feeds every emotion out of the person. At first, all that is left of the person is a dessiccated husk. As time passes, the Void begins to proliferate through the corpse, animating it. They respond only to their creator, and though they have no minds, they are highly intelligent, and will follow any command given to them by their creator to the best of their ability. Many retain skills they had in life, so some Úlairigûl are more specialized for certain tasks. Usually, younger Úlairigûl created from common folk are used as scouts and as cannon fodder, while others are much more specialized in certain areas of expertise. They are widely feared throughout the kingdom, and all try to avoid where the Úlairigûl walk. They have no emotions, making them perfect servants, and they grow more powerful with age.

The most feared of the Úlairigûl is that of the previous king, named the Gûl King. It is one of the oldest Úlairigûl there is, and it is is supposed to be the leader of the Úlairigûl, though it still takes orders from it's master, Kemptaar. In reality, however, the Gûl King was not the first Úlairigûl created. There were others, older, created by Kemptaar when he made his way to the castle. They have never been seen, however, and rumor has it that they are much more powerful than even the Gûl King himself, maybe even enough so that they could retain their previous forms. Who these creatures might have been before they were transformed, however, is a mystery in itself.
