hello everyone! i've read the threads about the da vinci code, and boy, it's like a war zone! anyway, i just thought i'd lay out my own opinions about the book. Firstly, the issue about whether or not the claims of the book is true... well we all can't prove it one way or another right? Again, it’s all just a matter of faith. Faith in what we BELIEVE is true. If we refuse to believe it’s true, then it’s our stand.
Just a question for those who HAVEN’T read the book, and judge it as false and insulting, wouldn’t it be unfair, if you just go around treating it as garbage, without even trying to actually read it first? I mean, why don’t you try to read the whole book first, and decide whether or not it really does deserve your harsh judgments? Wouldn’t it be better, if you knew the enemy before you can attack him? How will you know the information in the book is false and misleading, if you haven’t read it yourself? My advice, read it first before you judge. If you know and believe in yourself that the book is pure fiction, then even if you finish reading it, that belief won’t falter, right? So why not see for yourself, all angles of the story before you start debating about it?
Let’s say, for the sake of discussion, that the DA VINCI code information is true? What is the main concern here anyway? To quote other people here, "JESUS had sex with a woman". To be honest, hearing that sentence would raise eyebrows and fists. Other people say, THAT CAN’T BE TRUE. For if it is true, then Jesus won’t be the pure, sinless savior that we know He is. Well, this is my answer. Why NOT?? why… what is so wrong with sex?! It seems to me that sex is now regarded as something disgusting, and evil and sinful… which in fact, sex was created by GOD himself, as a gift to mankind. Right?? In fact, sex has once been considered as a sacred ritual, a spiritual act, where man and woman commune with each other to experience GOD. It’s not even about eroticism. it’s spiritual in nature. So with that said… what is so wrong with Jesus doing that too? If sex is viewed as a sacred thing, a way to commune with GOD, will anybody here actually say that Jesus sinned by making love? I guess not. Because then, He would be communing with God the Father. That was what sex used to be before it was given a “negative” connotation. Ultimately, that’s what sex should be about. Not a sin of the flesh. And definitely not something we should be ashamed of. But sadly, this is not the way the world views sex anymore. With all the perversion that’s happening in the world… rape, lust, etc. The real meaning of sex is lost along the way. Apparently, with the current view of SEX, people just plainly refuse to accept the POSSIBILITY that Jesus did have sex in his time.
Can we really call it blasphemy? What the book was trying to tell us is that, Jesus was married to Mary Magdalene, and had a child. They say the church covered up that certain section of Christ’s life. His marriage to Mary Magdalene, and their having a child. But why would the church not want the people to know this? Because that would make Jesus look bad? Or that would make Him less of a Messiah? But the question is, what if it’s true? Would that NOT make him worthy of becoming our savior anymore? Will that make him less of who He is? I don’t think so. If Jesus had indeed married, and had a child, will that make him incapable of the works and miracles he’s done? Will that make him not worthy to be called the Son of God? Of course not. We should ask ourselves these questions, instead of just closing our minds completely to the possibility that this might actually be TRUE. It’s not blasphemy. If we look at it as blasphemy, then we force ourselves to believe just that. So are we saying that having a family is BAD? That being married is a bad thing? Or having a child for that matter? So that makes it an ABSOLUTE ZERO possibility that Jesus did it too.
I’m not saying I believe the stories, but I’m not saying I despise it either. I don’t see the book as a threat to anything. I view it as an opportunity for me to THINK and REFLECT… and review the extent of my FAITH. Faith in what? Faith in whom? That the Bible was written by men, chosen by GOD to write his works… or that Constantine rewrote it to exclude the Earthly life of Christ? Either way, we have no way of proving which theory is correct. We only believe the things that we are accustomed to. That which has been considered as FACT for centuries. When we were born in this world, it’s already there. So we have no choice but to believe it. And then suddenly, another story comes in, creating controversy, confusing us all again. Then debates start, because not everyone agree on one thing. So what do we do? We base it on FAITH. Faith that one of these numerous theories is TRUE. But which? Again, only our FAITH can answer that.
All these controversies about the Da Vince Code… personally, I really don’t think this should be a source of debate or warring between Christians. Or that it is a threat to Christianity or the Bible. It is just merely, another story. It may be true, it may be false, it all depends on what OUR faith tells us. Of course it’s not right to attack other people just because their belief is different from ours. The key is respect. Respect for our individual differences. Some people believe the Da Vinci Code to be correct. Some don’t. It doesn’t matter which truth we believe in. Bottom line is, Christ is still our savior. No story or history could tarnish or negate that TRUTH. In the end, it is not our RELIGION that will save us but our SPIRITUALITY. It doesn’t matter what HISTORY Jesus had… or what kind of life he had on Earth. The truth is clear that He saved us all from sin. That’s the ultimate truth. The da vinci code just offers another addition to the story. A possibility of a hidden story about Jesus’ life. Whether we choose to believe it or not, the possibility exists.
So what should we do about it? My approach? Have an open mind. Open our minds to all kinds of truth, all kinds of ideas. You don't have to believe every single thing you read or learn. But in the end, having listened to all sides of the story, listen to your heart. Your inner self will be talking to you, whispering exactly what you should believe in. question that voice, challenge that voice, and not the people around you. If we continue exchanging harsh words and criticisms with each other, we will only be further divided. And Christianity, as we know it will be further dispersed. We wouldn’t want that now, would we?
