The xbox is not that sturdy, like snes was where you could throw your system across the room, and it would still work. I know, I did that when I was a kid.

I am on my third xbox right now. But I dragged the other two, all over the place, linking it up to other xboxs. So it got a little banged up in the process. My brother has his original xbox, that came out on day one. But he never moves the thing at all.

This topic is about consoles, not PC's. Of course PC's "can" be better, but you have to pay the money for it. Also they don't do online gaming as well as xbox does. Sure they have more and better games, but hardly anyone has voice chat, so comunication is done through keyboard, which is weak.
Plus there is a level playing field for xbox users, no mouse, and no keyboard, just one controller. Not all mouses are the same, some are better than others.

I'm not knocking PC gaming, I just think that xbox gives a great product for a great price. And so do the other two systems, but for me, the hardcore gamer, its xbox that stands out over the other two systems.

Well, I would have to say that the console war should and will never end. As for the X-box controller, I will say that the original controllers were way too big and that the S controllers are alot better. As for which system I like, I like all of them. I don't care who wins and who doesn't. As long as they continue making games, I will play them. As for online play, I haven't felt the need to go online. I am a hardcore gamer, but I don't like to brag about my skills. The above post that says that they are one of the best gamers, is pure bragging. If you were such a good gamer, you should let your actions speak, not your words. Sorry, if I offend anyone. Probably the only game I would play online would be Final Fantasy 11, but thats it.

If your not online, then your not a hardcore gamer, in the competitive sense. Maybe one in the play by yourself catigory, but not competition.

If you had skills, you would want to see how good they are. I could take your game, that I have never played, and probably beat you with it. Now thats bragging.

I've always wondered what makes a person a "hardcore gamer" and why it's something to brag about. Frankly if I were a hardcore gamer I'd be a little ashamed to admit it, especially as I got older. I guess that's probably because people associate video games with kids. Not to mention that there are few real-world benefits associated with being good at video games. If I were a good shadetree mechanic, I could fix my car; if I were good at building things, I could keep my house in good shape; if I am good at Soul Caliber 2, well, I got nothing. Aside from the intrinsic enjoyment we get from playing games, there's no real value in them unless you're talking about the history lesson you get from games like Age of Empires.

To make this post a little more relevant to the topic, I have been looking more into the XBox lately. I would absolutely love to get my hands on a modded one. The ability to listen to mp3's and play movies and video games from older systems (SNES mainly) as well as the few decent games that are out for the system make me like it more and more. Plus there's the rumored price drop coming up.

I'm laughing at your macho posturing over video games. It sounds a lot like you're compensating for something.

Also, I sincerely doubt you could beat me at most any PC FPS.

Ahhh the usual manipulation of a discussion type answer. When all else fails, or as a debate tactic, just call the person insecure.

Well I was referring to console games, seeing that this is a console thread. I was very good with the mouse, when it was on Dreamcast, but that was years ago.

You are associating value with money. If you were skilled at such and such a thing, you wouldn't have to spend money on it. But with Soul Caliber 2, you think there is no money in it, so whats the value of it.

For me, being good at Soul Caliber 2 = passion. Heart pounding, adrenaline pumping, passion. Plus you assume there is no money in SC2, but I will explain what I mean on this in a moment.

Videogames are associated with kids for one main reason. The industry is younger than I am, and I am 28 years old.
If you really look at its history, the gaming business really didn't catch on fire until Atari, but that died out, so you could really argue it was Nintendo. If that is the case, then video games are less than 20 years old. I had an atari, and I loved playing games then too.
It is estimated that 150 million americans play some kind of video game.
With those staggering numbers, there is huge potentol for money to be made playing video games professionally.

There are people who do play games for money, right now as we speak.
With those numbers, and all of those kids growing up, and still playing, and buying videogames, you are looking at a videogaming revolution.
Something like that can be as big, if not bigger than physical sports that are played today, like football and basketball.

But I don't play just for money, I play for the passion. If the money is there, fine I'll take it. I have a job, where I make money, I play games as a hobby.

Don't get me wrong, I have "wasted" shameful quantities of hours playing video games. I have no delusions of ever getting paid for the time I spend playing video games, nor do I expect my wife to understand why I do it other than the fact that it's a hobby of mine. If I classify video games as a hobby then I can justify it as long as I keep my priorities straight- the minute games come between me and my spiritual walk/marriage/job/etc, then I'm out of line. In that respect I can see how gaming would be like baseball or soccer (but with more Mt. Dew )- the ratio of people who enjoy it to the number of people who get paid to do it is quite small. Video games do offer other opportunities of getting paid, if you consider the people who make a living selling items in games like Everquest or Diablo II. I'm not sure if those people would be classified as 'hardcore gamers' though.

So what makes a hardcore gamer: the number of hours you play? Your win/lose record? Your dedication to a particular genre? Your knowlege of a particular game's secrets/strategies? I am one of the least competitive people I know. I don't care if I win or lose (although dying constantly in FPS's and the like frustrates me), and I don't excel at any one genre of game. I'm decent, but not outstanding. Does that disqualify me from achieving hardcore gamer status?

This is kind of a change of subject, but earlier in the thread I noticed that you called yourself "one of the best gamers in the nation." How do you quantify something like that? Is it because you can beat all your friends at a game of your choice, or have you participated in national tournaments that span all game genres? Frankly I find it rather presumptuous, but for all I know you could be the best gamer in the nation. And for all you know I could be Superman. And therein lies the problem with a statement like that: talk is cheap on the Internet.

But that brings up another point: baseball has the World Series, football has the Superbowl, soccer has the World Cup. What does gaming have? QuakeCon only covers one game in one genre, as do the StarCraft tournaments in Korea & the states. The diversity of game styles will be a detriment to the acceptance of Computer Gaming as a real sport, not to mention the fact that "sport" connotates physical activity which gamers historically have avoided. I guess if you just classified it as competition you could get around that. An Olympics-style event would be one way of crowning a gaming champion, but I for one would prefer to play games instead of watch them being played.

Sorry, I tend to get wordy as I get tired.

Hard Core Gamer - There are many different types of hard core gamers. If you put in alot of hours in gaming, you would be considered one. If didn't put that many hours into gaming, but the time you did use, you learned to master a game for competition rather than just play for fun, that would make you a hard core gamer.

I am a competetive hardcore gamer.

I am without a doubt one of the best gamers in the nation. This is based on my track records of video gaming, in contests and online.
Definitly one of the best Mortal Kombat 2 and 3 players out there, maybe the best. I played this game online.
NFL2k1 I was one of the top 5 for sure, played that online.
Ghost Recon, I was the leader of the #1 ranked team in the nation, based on 2000 teams.
Soul Caliber 1 I took second twice in a tourney.

Basicly I break down a game, and practice it over and over, trying to improve my skills. If I am losing, I adjust and learn from people better than me.
Its really just an attitude, thats all. The attitude of not staying down, but always thinking of better ways to improve my game.

Money - You don't see the future at making money on games. There are many ways of doing it. A big nation tourney could set someone up for life it was big enough. Local leagues is another way. There is more, but I have to go.

Well, as I said. I am not online and don't care to be. I play Warcraft 3 online and thats it. Not only that, but I don't care for all these mindless blow-up stuff games. As for whoever responded with the threat of beating me in any game, I accept your challenge. If you are really a gamer, then you won't be afraid to face me in the game of my choice. It will be over the computer of course, and the game will be Yugioh! If you need the program I can tell you where to find it. Don't dissappoint me!

I was referring to console games, and I said most people. I have done it many times, just go over someones house and beat them at there own game.

I'm use to console controllers. I did the mouse for a brief time and I was good with it, not a master like I am with the controller.

But for fun we can play your game Yugioh. Let me know where to download it.
