  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

For those who are unfamiliar with the Complete Idiot's Guide series, they are - like their relatives, the for Dummies series - a very useful treasure trove of knowledge on various subjects. The book from which this thread derives its name is specifically about Christian prayer and the running text is, if I recall correctly, written by a Presbyterian pastor. The book seems to be a good one, a great resource for learning more about Christian prayer traditions and things of Biblical importance, and something I would think of purchasing as Christmas presents for a couple of family members, however, some points of this guy's theology trouble me. Two specifically (but I'm only a couple chapters into the book):

- His assertion that God is not male, but transcendent of gender.

- That Heaven is not a place but a state of mind.

Thoughts?

Truly, if it doesnt adhere to the solid doctrines of the five solas then I would not think it could offer valid help in any area. There are so many wonderful books available that are true to scriptural teachings I think it would be more helpful to turn to them! Besides we are 'saints' of God, His treasures! We are not idiots! We are loved and cared for by the Holy of Holies, the Supreme ruler of the universe!
Try John Bunyans book, Prayer, if you want to read a soul searching book on prayer!
Wonderful sites also with great food for thought are:
www.eternallifeministries.org
www.monergism.com
www.apuritansmind.com
There are also many reformed book sites where solid food is available!
I've not read your book so I dont mean to sound critical. I'm basing what I say on the comments you made and their unorthodox statements!
Blessings to you as you grow in grace and knowledge of Him!
Soli deo gloria!
