For those who are unfamiliar with the Complete Idiot's Guide series, they are - like their relatives, the for Dummies series - a very useful treasure trove of knowledge on various subjects. The book from which this thread derives its name is specifically about Christian prayer and the running text is, if I recall correctly, written by a Presbyterian pastor. The book seems to be a good one, a great resource for learning more about Christian prayer traditions and things of Biblical importance, and something I would think of purchasing as Christmas presents for a couple of family members, however, some points of this guy's theology trouble me. Two specifically (but I'm only a couple chapters into the book):
- His assertion that God is not male, but transcendent of gender.
- That Heaven is not a place but a state of mind.
Thoughts?
