So.... The girl by me in music class cheated on this morning's quiz. There was a diagram that we basically need to memorize and about half of the questions were straight off the diagram.... She had copied the diagram into her notebook and was studying it right before the quiz, which was normal.

She put her notebook into her backpack open to the page with the diagram and flipped her backpack shut without zipping it. When she got to that section she flipped the backpack open with her foot and started answering off the diagram....

I know she knew it wasn't allowed because she kicked the backpack shut when the teacher walked by.... So obviously she knows she shouldn't.

I'm a bit annoyed, because I'm not sure I passed the quiz.... But I'm sure she did. It isn't fair! Plus, I was tempted to cheat off her notes too.... and I don't want to be dishonest like that.

honestly, I kind of want to report it to the teacher, but I am worried it wouldn't do any good since I have no proof. (the girl on the other side of her is a best buddy of hers and wouldn't tell, might have been copying herself...) And, I don't want to be seen as the snitch.

well.... As much as I want to make friends, and please my peers, I also want to make ethical decisions. That's more important for me. I want to do the right thing here.

As I see it, these are my three options. Which so you think is the best.... Most reasonable, most ethical, most Christ-like? Which would you/have you done?

A) ignore it. It's just a quiz, anyway. Sit somewhere else next time so I won't be tempted to cheat off her notes if she does it again.
B) talk with her and let her know I think this is wrong, and that if she does it again I will tell the teacher.
C) visit the professor's office this afternoon, tell him what happened, ask him not to reveal who told him, and hope that he accepts my story and that I don't get seen as "the snitch."

I do not know of any stories in the Bible that say if you see somebody do something wrong that you have to tell.

I do know that if asked to testify you have to and you have to be honest.

This is a personal decision that you have to decide on.

To me if somebody asked me if I seen them cheat then I would have to say yes but I do not see why I have to tell on them unless somebody is going to get hurt.

I would have to say that unless you are perfect to mind your own business unless somebody is going to get hurt.

Good luck on making a decision.

I also want to add that instead of telling on her take her aside and tell her that if she needs help studying that you will help her.

Who cares? I remember I just let a guy look at the answers I wrote because he didn't understand it. Who cares? Lol and what she did I did with history class, so bori.g, I wrote it on a paper which I layed underneath the other paper. So glad he didn't notice and with English words, why do I have to learn all that? You forget it the next week anyway.

If you feel you must tell the teacher, then you have another option - drop off an anonymous letter letting the teacher know that there is a student who cheated on the quiz. You don't really have to name names or even identify yourself, but that way the teacher can watch the students more closely during the next quiz.

When I was in college I ran across a couple of situations. In one situation we were supposed to turn in the question sheet from every test because the mid term and final questions were taken from those test. There was this one woman who didn't do that. What she would do is keep her test questions and pass everybody else test questions in. Well I saw her do it a couple of times. I guess the professor didn't think he needed to count the test. I told a friend, an older woman. She watched her the next time we had a test and sure enough the woman did it again. Well after my friend saw it with her own eyes, she went to the professor and told.

The professor exposed it to the class but he didn't name names. He just wanted people to know how he despised cheating. Of course there were a couple of people that didn't see the big deal but if you understand that the person basically had the entire mid term and final, it was a very big deal. Also when you think about how this person will probably in the future have decision making power regarding other people, it becomes a very big deal. There are enough unethical people in the working world as is. The person in my case wasn't kicked out of class, but I think she had to forfeit her “letter grade” for a pass/fail grade.

I say go to the professor and discuss your concerns. Tell him you would like to stay anonymous for the time being but if necessary you would be willing to come forth and say what you saw. The professor might not do anything initially. He/she might just need to observe the student. So don't assume that if you tell, nothing is being done. But once you tell the professor let it go...shake the dust and keep your focus on your personal ethics and academic career. :)

Just remember that if you turn in this classmate that you must always turn in yourself for all wrongs in the future.

Next time you do more than 10mph over the speed limit you must call the police on yourself and receive a ticket.

Anytime you do not cross the street at the crosswalk you must call the police and give yourself a ticket.

The next time you do anything and that means anything at all you must turn yourself in.

I do not like cheaters and we must keep a moral standard but unless you have kept every moral standard then I would not be watching others and what they do.

I marked a few things in bold and maybe you will receive your answer.

Romans 12 New King James Version (NKJV)

I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith. For as we have many members in one body, but all the members do not have the same function, so we, being many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another. Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, let us prophesy in proportion to our faith; or ministry, let us use it in our ministering; he who teaches, in teaching; he who exhorts, in exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness.

Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil. Cling to what is good. Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another; not lagging in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord; rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation, continuing steadfastly in prayer; distributing to the needs of the saints, given to hospitality.

Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. Be of the same mind toward one another. Do not set your mind on high things, but associate with the humble. Do not be wise in your own opinion.

Repay no one evil for evil. Have regard for good things in the sight of all men. If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men. Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,”says the Lord. Therefore
“If your enemy is hungry, feed him;
If he is thirsty, give him a drink;
For in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head.”

Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

This is so not true. You made this up!

The Word also speaks about not being a partaker of other men's sins....

The Op saw it. Maybe she was supposed to see it and do something. We don't know. What we know is that it bothered her enough to make a thread. Many times people co-sign wrong or evil with their silence. It's not until someone stands up in courage and say's NO you can't do that that the person is exposed and stopped. How many times have heard stories of individuals doing wrong only to find out people saw stuff all along and never said a word. So that person just went on to later destroy other people's lives?

No you might not say something but it doesn't mean she shouldn't....

That's different. If she's in her last year to become a surgeon and does it all the time so people's lifes would be in danger it would be better to tell it.
This is about a quiz in a music class, lol. Oh that makes me think of my uncle, he's a music professor in the States. If she'd tell him he couldn't care less.^_^ Frits De Jonge at University of South Carolina - RateMyProfessors.com^_^ Give her a tip to go to him, she'll get her diploma without doing anything.

"This is the best and easiest class ever. I hate music and he made me like it. He is very quiet but he likes to makes dirty jokes. We walked in to take the finals and just gave us all A's. No test or anything. If you can't pass this class with an A, then you must be stupid because it was SOO easy"

"You can be brain dead and make an A in this class, rarley takes attendance and you mainly watch movies and write critiques he does not even read. Easy easy A"

For the record, a confession without corroborating evidence will not stand up in court. In your examples, the police won't even be able to prove the crime itself even happened.

However, what you are suggesting is that you cannot turn people in because you are not perfect. That's a huge standard to set.

What I will give you is that if she were to turn someone in for cheating then she better not ever cheat on a test, as that would make her a hypocrite.

A quiz? I don't think so and that's the problem for me. The way the Op described it, it sounds like this girl was not only very deliberate but she knew how to cheat without being detected. That doesn't sound like a one time thing to me...

Since there are no witnesses other than yourself I suggest doing it like this.

Go to her and let her know what you seen and ask her if she needs help with the subject. Let her answer be the end of the drama.

Who really cares anyway, I cheated my way through half of college. People have to do what they have to do in order to survive.

Not everybody has good studying habits and they have to get by as they know best to do so.

Is it fair that God gave some people great memories and high IQ's so they do not have to study all the time.

Heck, I had one teacher that passed me only so she did not have to deal with me twice.

Can you blame a starving man for stealing food? NO you cant! Then why can you blame a dumb person for cheating to make it?

My brother in law is so smart, he wrote a paper for his friend in college. They did the homework of my nephew and he helped me once, I had to program something and I didn't understand a thing about it. He did it in less than an hour, he's a programmer. The reason I got my diploma for cartography was because we had to do it with two people, one shy guy who also had noone did it with me. He was so brilliant, I had no idea what he was doing, all I did was draw the front side of the paper.

@NWAB Oh please!

This stuff is reminding me of Brian Williams, the used to be respected NBC News anchor whose career just came to a screeching halt. He got caught lying about a news story. They thought it was one story. Turns out there are other news stories he's lied about as well.

His lying didn't happen over night. He started somewhere. I'm just saying...

Well you could cheat or you could work harder at your classes since you are facing challenges.

I guess each person makes the choices they feel like they can live with.

With some things like programming I can work as hard as I want, I don't understand a thing about it and I don't need it for my work. I told my boss how I got my diploma. He thought I could also program stuff, nope.

I don't know. Moral obligation?
Some people can't actually go to sleep with stuff like this.

There was one paper I wrote that a classmate said he just wanted to "read" but I caught him copying and "paraphrasing" every line.
All my effort being pirated.
Well, I didn't rat him out. But I gave him a piece of my mind.
It was disrespectful and unfair.
And yes, I know, nothing in life is fair. But sometimes, we need to grow spines to take our own stand on things - even if it means we can't please everybody.
