I understand why someone would want to be a Nazirite. Being close to God can be really awesome.

And the blessing at the end stuck out to me. It's in the liturgy, although I don't remember where. I had that memorized before I realized it was in the Bible!

THIS verse, right at the end, is ASTOUNDING!

89 And when Moses was gone into the tabernacle of the congregation to speak with him, then he heard the voice of one speaking unto him from off the mercy seat that was upon the ark of testimony, from between the two cherubims: and he spake unto him.

a voice of one speaking to Moses from off the "mercy seat"? This is profound. Isn't Jesus Christ the only One to ever sit on the mercy seat?

I think there are two Biblical words; Nazarite and Nazarene. Nazarite refers to the opening verses of Numbers 6, when a man or woman vowed, shaved his or her head, etc. Nazarene refers to an inhabitant of Nazareth, as was the Lord Jesus before His public ministry.

In the Levitical priesthood which was surpassed when the Lord Jesus was revealed, priests had to be of the tribe of Levi.

But the Lord Jesus was of Judah, not of Levi, and He became a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.

Hebrews 7.12 says the priesthood and the law was changed; no one can now claim legitimately to be a continuation of the Levitical priesthood.

Hebrews 7.19 says that we now have something better than the law: 'a better hope by which we draw near unto God'.

I also noticed that the Nazirites weren't allowed near dead bodies, and Jesus sure broke that rule.

Interestingly, in Acts Paul the Apostle was involved in what seems like a Nazarite vow / Levitical offering in the temple. The old system of sacrifices for sin, had been replaced by the perfect, sin atoning work of the Lord Jesus.

However, doing this maybe gave Paul the excuse to go to Jerusalem where there would be many Jews to testify to. Just as Paul circumcised Timothy, not because there was virtue in law-keeping, but because it would give Timothy a greater hearing for the Gospel among Jews. Similarly today, some people do things that other Christians might not do, but if it's done with the motive of furthering the Gospel, other Christians can respect them, even if they would not do it themselves.

I do not understand this passage, what does it mean? It sounds like God is showing partiality to those that he has chosen over the firstborn or vise versa.

16 They are the Israelites who are to be given wholly to me. I have taken them as my own in place of the firstborn, the first male offspring from every Israelite woman. 17 Every firstborn male in Israel, whether human or animal, is mine. When I struck down all the firstborn in Egypt, I set them apart for myself. 18 And I have taken the Levites in place of all the firstborn sons in Israel.
