(Numbers 26) Because the first generation had perished a second census of Israel had to take place and was a preparation for the Promised land.

(Numbers 27) Preparation for the Promised Land continues with the portions of inheritance for the new generations. The daughters of Zelophehad successfully claim their father's inheritance, after they had been overlooked because all his male heirs had died. A case of women's rights! Joshua is appointed to succeed Moses as leader to take the Children of Israel into the promised land. Aaron had already died. Joshua ('a man in whom is the Spirit',would share the leadership with Eleazar the Priest. Moses laid his hands upon Joshua and gave some of his authority to him so the people would recognise him to be the leader after Moses died.

(Numbers 28;Numbers 29; Numbers 30 ) Offerings given to the LORD. 'Daily offerings', 'Weekly offerings' and Monthly offerings to be made by the People of Israel together. I am reminded of the Christmas carol for us in these days,'What can I give Him poor as I am? If I were a shepherd I would give a lamb. If I were a wise man I would do my part. Yet what can I give Him,give my heart'.

(Numbers 31) 'Vengeance on the Midianites'.When Israel entered the plains of Moab it came up against severe opposition from the Moabites and the Midianites. The battle that ensued was also severe and the victory would be the LORD's. (Numbers 32) This was the beginning of 'the occupation of the Land. That is the East side of the Jordon river. The people may have desired to stay on that side of Jordon,for fear of crossing over into the Promised Land,but it was essential that the crossing over would take place. We also must go right into the promises that God has for us!

(Numbers 33)'Review of Israel's journey from Egypt'. 1) From Egypt to Moab. 2)God speaking to Moses about clearing the land of enemies to allow for true worship. (Numbers 34) 'Boundaries of Cannaan'. God speaks and Moses listons and obeys! Good advice for each of us! The job of dividing the land is given to delegates from every tribe.

(Numbers 35) 'Cities for the Levites'. Cities of Refuge'. The Levites were to receive 4Numbers8 cities. 6 of these would be cities of refuge. (Numbers 36) Tribal rights including woman's rights. 'These are the commandments and the judgements which the LORD commanded the children of Israel by the hand of Moses in the plains of Moab by the Jordan,across from Jericho' (Numbers 36:13) I have enjoyed contributing to the Book of Numbers notes. Now it is back to 'brinny' for the next book starting on 1st November? God bless you all!

DEUTERONOMY 1. We look forward to reading this book and learning from it. 'Brinny' has been having computer problems but will be back soon. Deuteronomy 1:1 starts us off with,'These are the words which Moses spoke to all Israel on this side of the Jordan in the wilderness...' The journey from Egypt was complete and Moses gave his farewell message. He would not be allowed to enter Canaan himself but desires that God's people should go in and possess the land that God promised. Tribal leaders are appointed as they continue. 12 spies are sent to Canaan. The Israelites rebel and cannot enter. They had been through so much but had not learnt the lesson of obedience and instead rebelled. How tragic! (DEUTERONOMY 2) 'The wilderness wanderings'. God provided for His people in the wilderness. (DEUTERONOMY 3) Land East of the Jordan was given to Reuben,Gad and half the tribe of Manasseh. Moses is forbidden to enter the Promised Land.

Thank you for this wunnerful summary of Deuteronomy 1-3.

I'm kinda' sad for Moses being forbidden to enter the promised land. He had done soooo much and endured sooo much from the people, who even wanted to kill him, and even his own brother and sister (Miriam and Aaron) conspired against him.

'Now,O Israel, listen to the statutes and the judgements that I teach you to observe,that you may live and go in to possess the land which the LORD God of your fathers is giving you' (Deuteronomy 4:1) I identify with the sadness 'brinny' feels about Moses being forbidden to enter the Promised Land. This was for disobedience when he stuck the rock twice when God was to provide water. God obviously knows best and we have to trust His wisdom. Moses. tells the people,'You shall not add to the word which I command you nor take from it that you may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you'. He tells them to beware of idolatry. Moses establishes Cities of refuge East of the Jordan and introduces God's law.

I agree. Moses had a daunting job ahead of him. It was also written that he was the humblest man on earth. he was to "shepherd" a people that rebeled against and conspired against him. It is heartening that God had his back and demonstrated that in so many ways. Even if Moses could not enter the promised land, he remained a servant of God and beloved in God's eyes. That's reassuring.

I agree. Here also. We desperately need them here.

It's amazing that Moses was able to be in such close proximity to God as God wrote them with His own finger.

Wow, here in verse 2, God spells out why He had the Israelites in the wilderness 40 years.....

They were sorta' in "boot camp"

"And thou shalt remember all the way which the Lord thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments, or no."

This is awesome!! God intends to use His people who are powerless compared to the gigantic people they will drive out, to show HIS strength and HIS power to these giant people, as a judgment against them.

But they rebel, not trusting God. Moses pleads for the people.

(They really should've appreciated Moses more)
