Hope this is the place to post this. I'm just curious. Could anyone give the situation as to how a pastor and an evangelist were called to their calling? Preferably those that we would recognize.

1. If you could please note or tell what their job or position was before they were called whether menial or otherwise and...

2. The circumstances or how they were called?

Thanks,

Frank

Honestly, I'm not sure what you are asking. But it is a well-established principle in most churches that pastors should be "called" by the church in some manner or other--by a congregational vote, elected by the regional convention or classis or synod, or some other such method, but called and not self-appointed. All of this varies by denomination of course.

I was afraid of that. And at the risk of failing to be understood again I'll try and make myself clear. Of the better or well known pastors/evangelists can anyone give the circumstances of their calling and their acceptance of their calling? And of what their life was like before their calling? I'll let you choose which pastor and/or evangelist. Is this better?

I felt the urging of the Lord God to be a preacher in my middle twenties. At the time, I was a U. S. Marine Sergeant and raising a family. That was the middle 1970s.

I kept studying Bible, doctrine, apologetics and such; expecting some further indication or 'prompting' in the matter. I spent six years as a Border Patrol Agent and then twenty-two years with U. S. Customs in Los Angeles, PDSR California. Or, as I like to think of it, Sodom and Gomorrah without the pretense.

The church I attended in Signal Hill, PDSR California needed a pastor and called me in early 2000. I believe the Lord wanted me in that position because - in the words of Micky Kostmeyer - He "... wanted a whacko willing to stick his finger in the fan". I was presented the task of closing down the church, ending the non-profit corporation status and disposing of the property and assets - to a Cambodian Christian group.

Now I'm a member of another congregation and serving in various ways.

I don't think there is a single 'way' to be called as a minister or preacher. My experience was I could not reject the offer and duties.
