  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Where? The United States, more specifically, the fictional town of Sandis, population 35,000

When? Present. Several important events cause it to skip a few years (shouldn't progress farther than 2012)

What? The Book of Life is a magical book that was enchanted to give "The Author" complete control over events not yet passed (in other words, the future).

The rules of the book:

1. Whoever gains ownership of this book will see the Angel of Death, Michael within 31 days.

2. The owner of the book has complete control over events not yet passed.

3. The owner of this book can control people's actions that would not be out of touch with their personality.

4. If the book is used to control a specific individual more than six times, that person will die.

5. The book can be used to cause someone to die of any reason specified.

These are the most basic, and the most important, as well. What this is saying is, whatever is written in the book will happen. If the date is not specific, it will occur in the two minutes after it is written. If a day of the week is specified, but not a numbered day, it will occur at the nearest time (if someone writes 'Friday', it will occur on the next occuring Friday)

Who? Edward Renault finds a book in a local bookshop called "La Libra De Viva" , which is "The Book of Life" in Spanish. After being told it was "black magic", he buys the book anyway, curious.

He then meets the Angel of Death, Michael, who has two faces--one, is his "Good" side, which is the typical representation of a perfect angel....the second is a hideous, more ugly incarnation, the "Bad" side. Michael says he uses the Bad side on truly evil people who die to scare them. He says that is why some people, so near to death, scream in anguish and horror.

Edward goes on a quest to rid the world of all evil, and tries to create an organization of select followers--but, thinking it a game of playing "God", he rips out a few pages of the book, and scatters them all across New York city.

Why? The book was said to have been made long ago when the Israelites were headed for the Promised Land. Legend has it this book was created by God to enable them the power to end their enemies quickly and painlessly--but, when they disobeyed him, he punished them by making them circle Jericho, and made them lose precious time.

How will Edward accomplish his dream of creating an "Evilless" world? Edward plans on using the book to reform all criminals in jail, and killing the criminals around the world who are still at large. This throws the world into widespread panic, wondering if whoever is killing the criminals is planning to start with innocents next. The police begin to support Edward (not knowing it's Edward....He goes under the alias "Dio", which is Spanish for "God") since he is making their job easier.

Edward hopes that, by killing criminals, those who have contemplated robbery or murder will reform their ways by being afraid of death.....Michael disagrees, because there are some who are not afraid of death, or are either too stupid to realize what they are getting into. Michael also raises the question of what about little children who steal from a small-town mart, or men who beat their wives in secret? Edward realizes that to be "God", he will have to be everywhere at once. And so, he sets out to create several followers, with another book with the blank pages bound into it, with the basic set of rules, as well as a 'fake' set of rules:

6. Whoever holds at least a piece of a page of the book of life cannot be killed by the effects of this book.

7. Those who do not write in the book 30 days after receiving it will die of a heart attack.

Characters:

Edward Renault: Main character/ anti-hero
Age: 17
Height: 5' 11"

And any other characters are welcome. They can be antagonists to Edward using the ripped off pages, or they can be neutral characters who get the pages and use them to get what they want. It's a strange case of murder and mystery, with several people at the heart of the mess, all instigated by one person.

The game begins....All too soon.

One thing about the intro - how would the police know that the people he was killing were criminals? That's most of the justice system - figuring out who's a criminal and who isn't.

I will need to use a character with powers. Could my character have given himself powers by writing on a page of the book?

Technically, yes.....Just not, drawn out energy beams from his eyes, and whatnot....

The police know because, well, there are two major clues...

1. He's most certainly not killing just innocent people sitting at home.

2. He's only killing people who the police have reported having committed a crime, or criminals who appear on news reports.

In other words, they know whoever's doing it is getting the information from information open to the public. They just don't know how.

And, with the scattered pages of the book, others will be using the pages to get what they want, as well--by controlling teller clerks at banks to mail money to their home, or whatever. Getting revenge, you name it. Edward is just trying to make his boring life more fun.

I will, of course, play Edward....Now, we just need a few more people.

Well, there are many groups, actually....

Those who are allied with Edward: Help Edward by killing criminals with the pages, by their own means or personal instruction. Edward has a select few he really trusts, but the others are disposable to him as pawns that can be captured by the police.

Police Force members: Have less pages than Edward's group, because they chance upon them from captured criminals or from catching the pages scattered by Edward. They try to use the pages to catch Edward, or Edward's allies.

Neutral characters: Characters who use the magic of the pages to accomplish their own dreams--revenge, revival of a dead relative, crime sprees.

Otherwise good characters that believe Edward's group is doing a good thing by ridding the world of evil, but believe he is going about it the wrong way.

Does anyone else know of any rules that should be added to the Book before we actually begin? I think it needs to be limited some more.

I think Edward being able to control anyone is wrong...I think you should remove that power. Why would God give that power to the Israelites? If it was to help them catch food, and kill their enemies without causing them pain, why would they need something that could control anyone? I don't think God would give that power to them....what if they had tried to control Moses?

Ah, so the police are trying to arrest him, they're just sorry to do it. That's fine. Technically, he's a murderer. :) There will be some die-hard cops that despise him, just like for all those Marvel superheroes.

Never mind why, God can do whatever he wants. But I agree that it should be weakened. How about the book can't control spirits, including human spirits? Since the characters have to write whatever they want to happen, anyone who was targeted would be able to fight back.

The book still needs some limit to the breadth of the statements that can be written. How about all statements become true after a delay of some sort, and are only valid as long as they are still written on the page? The delay can be at the discretion of any one of us real people (probably the person whose character wrote it, but not necessarily). As a general rule, more powerful statements get longer delays.

Hmmm.... I think I'll go with a random guy named Bob with no past who is walking down the street one day and finds a page of the book. He never goes back to his apartment, and doesn't show up for work the next morning. That way, I don't need a bio; Bob builds himself up from his own bootstraps.

Okay, how about this:

The book can allow control of someone else, but if the person being written about KNOWS they are being written in the book, they can resist it with their free will.

Any other ways it could be limited?

Let's extend that to knowing of the existence of the book. Otherwise, someone with a page could just write "everyone with any part of the book will lose their parts of the book tomorrow, and I will find all the parts." That would at least protect our characters.

Perfect. My brain is literally not working right now....I know how I want this to work, but there are so many rules to it.

Also, let's make it a day-delay before the events occur, instead of two minutes.

Now, we just need a few more people. You can have multiple characters in this story, because not everyone is going to live through the end of the story.

Yes, your characters are approved, you guys (Brill and Blaziken)
