  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

"If" is the largest two letter word in the English language as well as the brick and mortar of strawmen, but since all the words of Jesus are not allegorical/symbolic, and the Israelites did not sit around the campfire passing around stories before writing them down, then no, the entire Bible cannot be allegorical. I hope this helped.

well if everything that Jesus said is to be considered symbolic then yes, the new testament is just allagory
but I do not think that everything Jesus said is just symbolic

as for the part about the Old Testamant, yes it was "passed around the camp fire" so to speak
but why do you think that this would make it more allagorical?

Here are mentions of the same, the reasons given for it and examples (in old) and new as shown

Psalm 78:2 I will open my mouth in a parable: I will utter dark sayings of old

Mark 4:34 But without a parable spake he not unto them: and when they were alone, he expounded all things to his disciples.

Mat 13:10 And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables?

Mat 13:11 He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given.

Mat 13:14 And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive:

Mat 13:18 Hear ye therefore the parable of the sower.

Mat 13:24 Another parable put he forth unto them

Mat 13:33 Another parable spake he unto them

Mat 13:34 All these things spake Jesus unto the multitude in parables; and without a parable spake he not unto them:

Mat 13:36 Then Jesus sent the multitude away, and went into the house: and his disciples came unto him, saying, Declare unto us the parable of the tares of the field.

Mat 15:15 Then answered Peter and said unto him, Declare unto us this parable.

Mat 21:33 Hear another parable...

Mat 24:32 Now learn a parable of the fig tree

That is just in Mat where others are named in Mark, Luke and John
But its also written in Hosea this...

Hosea 12:10 I have also spoken by the prophets, and I have multiplied visions, and used similitudes, by the ministry of the prophets.

Psalm 78:2 I will open my mouth in a parable: I will utter dark sayings of old

Paul speaks of speaking things similar here (and by way of comparing) as taught of the Holy Ghost

1Cr 2:13 Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.

And example of which things and such comparisons made (between bring out of their treasure old things and new) can be found here in Galations

Gal 4:24 Which things are an allegory: for these are the two covenants; the one from the mount Sinai, which gendereth to bondage, which is Agar (snip) you can read the rest

Figured I would add these to the topic of the OP

A lot of what Jesus said was in parables (Fireinfolding gave you a bunch of verses on that). So, if you do not understand something - no problem. Read what you can understand.
If you can understand it, it is what you see. Very simple.
If it gives comparisons to seeds, or flowers, of grass (you need to use common sense) this is figurative.

The Old Testament is a real historical book. It describes actual events.
In some parts it is presented in plain language, like in historical books.
In some parts it is in a prophetic type of a language. Very complex.
(I just skip prophetic parts, ^_^ :) very hard to understand. :))
Entire Genesis - literal. Unbelievable to some, yet as literal as day.

You see, Christ accepted the entire Old Testament as is.
He accepted that Jonah was inside the belly of the great fish, and all the other events.
And since we call ourselves Christ-ians, we believe what he believes.

Does this help?

Thanks, :)
In Christ,
Ed

I don't know how you got the idea anything Jesus said was symbolic or allegorical. All his words are literal.
