EU Envoy: Summit failure could trigger new intifada
Leaders seek joint declaration ahead of US talks
A failure to advance the peace process at next month's Middle East summit in Annapolis, Maryland could trigger worse violence than the second intifada that followed the collapse of the Camp David talks in 2000, a senior EU diplomat conceded on Monday.
"The cost of failure is even bigger then in 2000," EU envoy Marc Otte told reporters in Brussels, according to The Jerusalem Post, listing the growing threat of a nuclear Iran, destabilization in Iraq and the rising regional power of both Hamas and Hizb'Allah.
As the US-sponsored conference draws close, the offices of Israeli Premier Ehud Olmert and Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas have been meeting with increasing frequency, trying to hammer out the principles of a joint declaration which the two parties would bring to Annapolis.

"We can say, ahead of the real discussions beginning between the negotiators, that there is no agreement on any issue yet," chief Palestinian negotiator Ahmed Qurie told Reuters. The Palestinians want to draft a document that would outline a feasible Palestinian state, whereas the Israelis want an assurance of security and a declaration of joint principles upon which further negotiations after the November summit could be based on. With Abbas untenable grasp on Gaza and Olmerts involvement in numerous scandals real peace may just be more rhetoric
