It's that time of year. You guessed correctly. The time of year where I start getting really nostalgic for good old gaming goodness. I was looking through PCGamer magazine last night, and I realised that nothing new has been coming out. This year looks like a good year for games, with such things as Far Cry and Armed and Dangerous (though, it came out late late last year. like..december. like late december) hitting the shelves, the Killing genre's getting some spice.
I, for one, am sick of "kill Nazis," or "kill mutants."
Back in the old days, these were all new ideas. They were fun, new ideas. Now they've been stamped into the ground.
So, what direction do the game developers turn? Graphics. Oh please. When it comes right down to it, "good graphics" just really aren't. They're never going to look "real" until they have real-world 3D projections. You can get more and more and more polygons going on, but what good is it going to do you if your story is base and - in truth - nothing more than a redo of Last Year's Big Hit(TM)?

I thought, perhaps, one should turn to the Consoles for original gaming goodness..but upon doing so, I was met only with the same problem. That is to say, the same problem..as in, the problem of "same."
Consoles just have their own set of same that they go by. And really, the more I think about it, there are very few titles that even interest me when it comes to the console. Mainly, I'm looking forward to Fable for the Xbox. I will have that game, and swear here upon my own life.
But in the end, the Consoles aren't offering anything new in terms of real, deep down gameplay.

"So," one might ask, "Steve..what are you going to do?"

I am going to stop looking for something new, and that includes graphics. I'm tired of trying [insert game here] because it has [insert huge number here] more polygons than [insert game from previous year] and a brand new [insert something like "lighting" or "wind" or "cloth"] engine.

I just want sweet gaming that'll make me happy, without having to worry about the latest drivers or the frustrating camera angles.

What all this means is that I'm going to be seeing my good friend Milo of Crystal Caves a lot in the next week or so.

sorry, I uh..didn't mean to preach.

I wrote this for my blog, and decided it was so good I'd share it with you mates.
