  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

It is Thanksgiving Day in the US today.
What are the staples in your family's Thanksgiving meal?
What are your memories?

For my family growing up we went to my maternal grandmother's until I was in high school.
(We stopped going because she passed away)

We had Turkey and Grammy's stuffing...
Mashed potatoes and gravy
French style green beans and carrots and squash
Rolls or biscuits
Frozen blood - Oops - I mean jellied cranberry sliced from the can.
Fruit jello salad

Pumpkin pie and Apple pie

We would start eating straight up at noon at the end of the Parade.

After the meal we would put up my grandmother's artificial Christmas tree and decorate her home (apartment).
I was always in charge of putting the nativity set under the tree.
I was the oldest.

Thanks for sharing that with us. Sounds like you have had a busy Thanksgiving over the past few years.

Missed Thanksgiving dinner today because I had to work, but we usually start out with one of the kids saying grace and then we tell what we are most thankful for. We all have a specialty that we bring to my sis's house so it varies from year to year, but the one thing I can count on is mom's cranberry eggnog jello salad.

So sorry you had to work.

Do you have the recipe - it sounds good. :yum:
I love eggnog. We use to make our own growing up.
Now I just buy it. On a rare occasion I will make it.

When pudding mixture is partially set fold in Cool Whip and nutmeg.

My whole family use to go to my grandmothers, they would be about 30 people there all together. And the after she passed away, it was too hard for my dad and aunt to get together like that with the big family without my grandma. So, the past 5 years just the immediate family has got together, it is still real hard on Thanksgiving and Christmas. Also, the beginning of Nov. was the first time since my grandma passed away that the whole family got together, I guess we want to start doing that as long as its a non- holiday time.

But Thanksgiving and Chrsitmas were also so much fun with my grandma. After dinner was over all the grandkids would spend the night with her and just have a huge breakfast the next day! Always be some real special memories to look back on. :)

We had about thirty as well. But it is also the first time my maternal grandma celebrated the holidays after losing her husband of fifty-eight years to alzeimers in August. So we did our best to stay busy as well as make sure that she felt loved and well-welcomed.

Thanksgiving is in October here. For our Thanksgiving supper we always have:
cabbage rolls (sour cabbage, meat/rice filling, no tomato sauce)
turkey (sometimes ham)
stuffing
cranberry sauce
mashed potatoes and gravy
jellied salad (jello with fruit chunks in it)
some kind of vegetables (usually corn or peas/carrots)
pickles
tossed salad
pumpkin pie with whipped cream

Obviously since our Thanksgiving is in October we don't do any Christmas stuff right after. Although the stores here do always go straight to Christmas displays on the day after Halloween, since we don't have Thanksgiving in between the two.

Wow, fishsticks, perhaps it's just the standard Canadian Thanksgiving Menu, but your list sounds almost identical to mine! There are just a few differences. We don't have cabbage rolls, and we always have "green jellied salad" (which has cream cheese, pineapple, and lemon and lime jello... mmmmmmm)
and we have pickling corn
and rolls (usually cornmeal ones from a local bakery)
and lettuce salad (with yummy dressing that Grandma makes!)
and apple cider to drink :)
For dessert, we usually have cake as well as pumpkin pie, cuz there are about 6 ppl who have birthdays right near Thanksgiving, in October, and we celebrate them then.

:( I missed Thanksgiving dinner this year... I had to work.

Everyone would be very disappointed if we had a big supper but didn't have cabbage rolls. Even more disappointed than if there was no turkey. That also goes for the community suppers that all the small towns have in the fall. In fact, at almost all of those community suppers, they don't portion control the meat or anything else, except for the cabbage rolls.
