Is it true that the Texas governor is really considering secession from the union? I am aware that the state's constitution allows for voluntary secession, but, are they really serious?

do they actually want to become their own nation?

and, are people willing to accept another civil war because of it?

Thoughts?

I don't think it's a viable option, but people are talking about it.

New Mexico Independent Did TX Gov. Rick Perry suggest Texas might secede? You be the judge

Manisha Sinha: The Grand Old Party of Secession Obviously take this with a grain of salt.

I saw a poll on CNN last night and quite a few Texans supported succession. Unfortunately I can't find it anymore, but it was something like 20+% supported succession.

Even if they do succeed, I doubt there would be any military action. Democracies don't go to war against one another.

But if they go, go. I don't think we'd really miss much. Americans should be worried if CA or NY start to talk about succeeding, considering the economic impact.

I think that there'd be a war; I mean, the south was democratic, yes, but, we still fought a war with them when they wanted to leave.

But in the 20th Century, democracies don't fight. I mean, what would be the point of forcing Texas to stay part of the union? They're not an invaluable state like CA or NY.

And the "democracy" that existed during the civil war was quite different than democracy today.

the oil Texas has might be a good reason. I dunno.

Lol. Maybe. But I don't think the majority of the American population would support a war against Texas on that premise. Well, unless we're lied to about Texas having WMDs. :)

But really, do you think the rest of the country would care so much that they would be willing to send their children to die just to keep precious Texas as part of our union?

The Texas state constitution contains no provision for secession. This is an Urban Myth. What it does contain is a provision which allows it to split into 4 smaller states.

Also, the Supreme Court has already ruled (in Texas v White, 74 US 700 (1869)) That states are not allowed to unilaterally secede from the Union.

Gov. Perry is a complete hair-do.

And, for all of me, Texas can just go. Hasn't been anything I need from Texas since dear Molly Ivens went to heaven.

If Texas goes, it would be almost like losing the economy of California.

CA is the 8th largest economy in the world. Texas is 15th, behind Mexico. CA's GDP was 40% larger than Texas'.

Texas' GDP is 1.2 trillion. California's is 1.5 trillion.

I was using 2005 data. If yours is more recent, I'm not surprised that CA has gone down, considering the state of its economy. But CA would be more of an economic loss than TX. CA is more likely to bounce back. It's still the state with the highest GDP in the country. Historically, CA has paid much more to the federal government than it has gotten in benefit.

California's Balance of Payments with the Federal Treasury, Fiscal Years 1981-2003 -- A Special Report by the California Institute for Federal Policy Research

In any case, this isn't something we should be arguing about. TX won't secede. If it does, there won't be a civil war. If it secedes, the US will recover.
