Ten Commandments in the courtroom

There's a lot of hubbub recently about allowing the Ten Commandments to be displayed in courtrooms across America.

As Adventists I'm sure that most of us want to jump up and down and say "GREAT IDEA, God has been taken out of our judicial system! Bring Him back in!" We are, after all, one church that definitely stands firm on their importance to God, right?

I'm curious though, do we want our government to control how we obey the first four?

What about separation of church and state?

We know that eventually we will be told how we're going to be allowed to worship our Creator, so do we fight it every step of the way or do we encourage prophesy to play out without standing in the way at all?

I just wanted to see what your opinions were.

~Lainie

PS...have you noticed the people fighting hardest to bring the commandments back into the courtroom are the very ones that will tell you the 4th one doesn't "apply" to us or was abolished?

Personally, I'm leaving it alone...let things play out the way we know they are going to have to.

Besides if we let the 10 commandments in, everything else will have to be allowed, and you won't be able to walk in the door for all of the plaques, etc. You know the ones, "Allah was here", "Muslimfast"

I just NO I'm going to get "warned" for this one, but I really could NOT help myself...

Very good points Laine. And your right--when I first heard of the Judge Roy Moore contraversy over the Ten Commandments in his court yard, I was franky amused and for the same reason you stated. Because Judge Moore is a baptist if I recall correctly and "they" will fight you to the hilt that the Ten were "nailed to the cross"!! This seems a bit hypocritical to me.

Besides--I would rather ppl LIVE the Ten instead of making expensive monuments to them!! After all--didn't God say that the new covenant was "HIM" writing those laws upon our hearts and minds?? For the renewing of them??

Heb 8:10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people:
Blessings, Linda

It may depend on which "strain" of baptist you are, but the Old Primitive would NEVER have agreed that the commandments were nailed to the cross, anymore than they would EVER give up their threats of the fire and brimstone that await the sinner.

I do know that the Baptist denomination has changed though, because I understand that in some they actually partake of communion....something that was TOTALLY unheard of and not allowed in the church I grew up in...that was WAY too catholic for them. The times they are a-changin'.

Yes, I have been quite the funny girl today, haven't I. I kill me!!

Notice...I figured out the avatar thingy....There IS hope for me yet!

TrustAndObey,

You bring up some very good points. My first reaction is to say yes the ten commandments belong in the courtroom, but on second thought do I really want judges who are just men and women enforcing their earthly interpretations of God's laws. I think I really don't want that. I do believe that is what the future holds for us though.

I couldn't agree more. Do we want the government telling us how to love God above all other gods? Or how to keep the Sabbath day holy? (We already know they would eventually *pick* which day we get to cease from all work and call Sabbath.....and it wouldn't be the seventh day like God commanded).

A lot of laws are passed (and people allow it) under the guise of "oh it would be a much better country if.....". But can our legal system really tell us how not to covet our neighbor's possessions? NO they can't...no more than they can tell us how to honor God. God already told us how to honor Him!

It's already illegal in this country to steal and murder, but people break those laws of man and God all the time. The government will use those two commandment as a way to get the Ten Commandments back into the courtroom just so they can dictate how we follow the rest of them.

The big question I have in all of this, is do we, as Adventists, fight and get this delayed as long as possible so we can get the message out to as many people as possible before we'll be legally prosecuted for obeying God? Do we have an obligation to let prophesy happen (maybe even help it along) or to spread the message first?

Here is one answer from the SOP to help with your question. There are more--but they are too strong for tis forum. We would get the axe pretty fast!!! lol

In the courts injustice will prevail. The judges will refuse to
listen to the reasons of those who are loyal to the commandments
of God, because they know that arguments in favor of the fourth
commandment are unanswerable. They will say, "We have a
law, and by our law he ought to die." God's law is nothing to
them. "Our law" with them is supreme. Those who respect this
human law will be favored, but those who will not bow to the
idol sabbath will have no favors shown them.

THere are more SOP texts on us just not sitting back and not fighting immoral laws--it will take me some t ime--but I will find them. This is a good topic!!! One we ALL need to be studying--"FOR THE TIME IS AT HAND"!!

Even though I agree with your stance on the TC I would point out that this approach does not fit with the biblical example. The Bible tells us that "all these things" were written as an example. I would turn your attention to the story of Jonah. He was told to prophecy to NIneveh that it was to be destroyed in 40 days. If the Ninevites had taken your approach they would have been destroyed in 40 days. As it stands, they decided not to be paralysed by learned helplessness and got up and did something to change their future. We should not be sitting ducks.

Could you explain what you mean by "earthly interpretations of God's laws?" I may be reading you wrongly so I need some clarification.

I have Desire of Ages, though the print is very small and I finally gave it up and gave it to my daughter who LOVES it. I read as much as I could...I need to get a magnifying glass or something, I guess. I can get one of those at Family Dollar so that's no problem. It's just that Linda was so eager to read it, I gave it to her before I was through. I will finish it when she gets it back to me.

I have heard MUCH about The Great Controversy, and am eager to dig into that one.

PaleHorse and TrustAndObey have my address, honor. As a matter of fact, before I saw this post, I just messaged PaleHorse as he's on here too right now, to let you know I would love to have it.

They have sent me packages, I know they have it, but if for some strange reason they lost it, or don't have it, just let me know. I love you too.

A monument of the 10 commandments... how is it different from an idol? The monument Judge Moore had made weighed over a ton...

It is my opinion that the courts need to keep focused on judicial things and leave this alone...
The fact is that this is not an attempt to get the Ten Commandments into the court, but to get a monument into the court. How many monuments can we fit into one courtroom?

Actually in Judge Moore's case he wanted the momument and his version of Christianity.... and that is why he was ultimately removed from office.....

ten commandments is good in court but not to force anyone to obey the law. it must be in your heart to want to keep commandments. if commandments was in schools and also they taught creation not evolution, schools will be better off. 6 - 10 commandments yes 1-4 must be in your heart to serve obey God cannot be inforced

I am so torn on this subject. I dont want to the government at all telling us how to worship and when for that matter. But as a christian, i want Gods word everywhere for everyone to see it. I just dont know the right answer?! Its a tough one.

That's exactly why I posted it Happy. It's something I'm torn on as well. I see the terrorist attacks being used to push laws that hinder our freedom and now this.

I don't see it as something our government should "govern" at all. But it sure is nice to have people see that not only are some of them (not everyone accused is guilty) breaking man's laws, but they're breaking God's!

We all need to pray about this!
