Hello everybody,

This is my first post here, so let me tell you my story (a short version).

I was raised Catholic. At the age of 15 I was contacted by the Jehovah's Witnesses by a friend I met at school. I eventually started going to their Kingdom Hall and became a JW at the age of 17.

Two years ago (7 years later) I started to realize what a mistake I had made. I realized I had been taught wrong and was in a cult. It has been an amazing journey, one I can share at another time. Needless to say that in my departure out of the Watchtower, I finally came to Christ!

So anyway, the point of my thread. I have been going to many differant churches the past few months and have an interest in the Salvation Army. I was wondering what some of you who attend can tell me what you like about it as an organization and a Church.

Thanks in advance for your responses!

It's a beautiful part of the body of Christ, E. It isn't perfect, but I love it to bits. It is like Franciscan spirituality - passionate, full of joyful abandon (well, if you get into it properly! lol) prayer, simplicity and service.
Go explore the blogs, there are lots. They will give you a glimpse. sallybloggers is one of the big rings, international but with quite a few from the UK. The xanga ones are mostly US I think.
Warmest blessings,
Eleanor

I'm not a salvationist, but I love the Salvation Army. I volunteer as a youth worker at a corps in San Francisco. We're attached to a drug and alcohol rehab facility, so the people at the corps (church) are some of the most honest and genuine people I've ever met. This might have a lot to do with where they are in their life, but I've been volunteering there for just over 6 months and I've started attending their service on sunday because it feel so much like a family.

I explain the Army to my friends as a Christian Chruch run like a non-profit organization, structured like the army. Most of them have a hard time with the uniform (to be honest, I usually do too), but besides that they love what they do.

I love the fact that there are so many arias of the salvation army ranging from there acceptence of youth & new music of the way we worship, to the old ladies that love the song book & get out there flags & wave them.
It doesnt matter where you are in life or whats you've been through you'll be acspeted at a salvation army just as God acsepts you.
We have morning meetings with all age worship usaly with song book (traditional hyms) & sunday schools.
The night meeting (which most salvos have these days) are more contempurary with hillsong & stuff. With more meaning to newly saved christians & younger people but the older people like it too.
We have more then just the pastor (major) talk. I like that we have veriety in who we listen to.
I also love the fact that the army was built on helping people not just the saved. William booth made the army to help the drunks of the time & up to this day they'll do anything they can to help someone. We help b'coz that what were called to do not b'coz were HAVE to get them saved.
yea. thats how I see my church. I sometimes go to another church & I've seen about 5 different churches & many more different salvos & I love the salvos.
One draw back is it really is like an army & our corp offices & anyone inlisted move around alot & you loose friends but its good b'coz they can spead Gods word in lots of places.

I feel like there is just as much variation in the Army as there is in the "non-denominational" denomination! I go to a corps that only has one sunday service and it's mostly contemporary worship and one hymn. But I know of corps that do it completely differently! I think it really depends on the population of the corps and who your captains (pastors) are.

I'm curious, you say you grew up as a Catholic. Why are you not returning to the Catholic Church?
