• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I've heard of it...my friend who's suffered with depression was meant to go there...but in the end decided not to because he would be away from his family for too long.
Another friend though said it is really good...i don't know much about it but she said it's helped the people thats she's known.
When I leave school and get some training I'd really like to be able to do some phone counselling through them too...
Well sorry, I prolly wasn't much of a help...but just letting you know i've heard of it and heard it's a really good place.

It was started by an Assembly of God preacher, David Wilkerson, in the 1950's. he went to New York city and witnessed to they gangs with much success. He wrote a book titled "The Cross and the Switchblade, it later was made into a movie. Pat Boone and Eric Estrada stared. Teen Challenge has a very successful drug and alcohol treatment program that is for men and women of all ages. They stay and live in a group for at least 12 months, which give them time to get and stay clean, plus be grounded and rooted in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Read the book......it is very good.....jerry

I am a graduate of the Teen Challenge program. I went to the one in Saginaw, Michigan in 2001. They are individually run so the "rules" and atmosphere vary a little from location to location as I understand it. However, the mission statement and goals are the same. The one I went to was run by Sal and Alicia Flores. They are wonderful people who desire to bring change to people with all kinds of addictions. The program focuses on the fact that the drugs, sex, depression, etc (you fill in the blank with your problem) is not the real issue. Your separation from God is. People came in a few years back to disprove the claim that it's success rate was 70% for graduates. They swore that was impossible, considering government programs have a rate of 2-10%. They did EVERYTHING they could think of to disprove it, all the way to testing the water! In the end, they did find the percentage was wrong. As it turned out, they found more like 75% of graduates were still free from addiction 10 years later. I strongly encourage anyone to give it a real consideration. It will be the hardest thing you have ever done, but so worth it in the end!! If you have any questions, please feel free to ask me!

Hi all,

I'm digging up this old thread to ask a question for those who know about this program - We have local chapters in my area and I have met people who went through the program and testified about it. My question is - do they accept people other than actual 'teens'? Say for instance someone in their 20s. I have a friend of a friend who is in dire need of something like this and it may be the saving grace God is providing for them. I seem to remember older people participating as well?

It is not just for teens. I know a man who has stayed clean and sober through their program for years, and he was in his forties when he went through the program. When they visited a local church a few years ago, the had a gentleman who was in his sixties with them.

Nicky Cruz was one of the first directors of Teen Challenge in New York City. He has written several books, One Holy Fire, is one that I have read. I have also heard many have been helped to be set free through the work of Teen Challenge. It is a very intensive discipleship program. I do know that they are not limited to teens. I was set free from drug addiction, and know that it really takes a commitment. If it were not for the Lord setting me free I would still be in those chains. Teen Challenge offers a place of safety, like a city of refuge, to give those who need it the time to get grounded in the love of a savior.

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Me! Me! Me!

*Shara raises her hand high! I graduated Teen Challenge October 6th, 2009 at the Teen Challenge Women's Center in Houston, Texas!!!!!!! I graduated and am now an intern here, which is one of the leaders in the program who helps the ladies through their day.

Teen Challenge is a thirteen month faith based discipleship program for men, women, and teenagers who struggle with life-controlling issues. Mainly drugs and alcohol, but like me, my problem was for self-injury, depression, and abuse. It was started back in 1958 by a man named David Wilkerson who ministered to teen gang members on the streets. He opened up a safe haven there in New York for teens to come in to get help. You can read about this in The Cross and the Switchblade by him. Today it is one of the largest ministries in the world. There are over 250 centers in the United States (one in every major city), 13 in Texas, and 77 in other countries (you can even double check, but I believe the statistics are right!).

Through Teen Challenge, God basically saved my life. I was cut up, bound up, and broke up by the chains of self-injury and my past. I came in for 13 months, and it is not easy. Here, students can't get on the internet, you get two ten minute calls a week, and there are a lot of rules to abide by (you can check the rules out at www.tctexas.com They are about the same for every Teen Challenge center. There is discipline if you are disobedient, but if you go with the program, it is so rewarding...

I have my life back!!!!!!!!! I have more then I ever dreamed! I have been able to forgive my father and be free from my past, I am free from self-injury and depression, I am the praise and worship leader here, music director, and intern. I am taking my PSNC to teach classes here, and afterwards will get my Biblical counseling to counsel others here. It is a dream to me. My whole life is to serve Jesus now. I am free now...

Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you for asking!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think that might be a wrong website link though. Check this site out. You can look up any Teen Challenge center in the United States. There are men and women centers, teen centers, and a family center is located in Corpus Christi and some other place.

Never thought you would ask. :D
